Broke my screen on my Note II. Should I get another Note II for $550, sidegrade to a Galaxy S IV for about $70 more, or deal with it till the Note III comes out?

How bad is the screen broken?
You can send it back to Samsung & they will repair it for $175, shipped both ways.
If it is just the outer glass & the digitizer still works, you can buy a replacement glass for around 15 bucks & replace it yourself. I did this repair myself a couple of weeks ago & my phone works & looks like new.

Glass and LCD are bonded in one piece, I believe. Would be about $170 to replace it, and while I can do it, I just don't feel like putting that much effort into it to separate the glass.

I also don't have a heat gun.

Yeah, I actually called Samsung & got the price directly from them. They told me a full screen replacement, $175, shipped both ways.
To me, for a full replacement, it is very affordable. They said turnaround was about 5 days, back in hand.

Personally, I am an avid user of the s-pen. I don't really ever want to go backwards on that. I would get my Note 2 fixed(which I did), & wait for the Note 3. I already have the money for it put aside.

That's really affordable. I don't have a backup phone though, so I'd need to add in a hundred bucks or so to get one.

Edit: I use the S-Pen a bit, but not "avid", like you. I could do without it, but the one thing I don't want to lose is the screen size.

Edit2: The damage

Wait for Note 3, or get an Optimus G Pro for 550. It's excellent.

$0 to ignore it
$170 to repair a Note 2
$550 to get a new Note 2
$620 to get an SGS4

I would absolutely go the repair route!

Sure it's more cost effective, but if I screw it up, I'm stuck having to buy a phone anyway.

Or I can send to Samsung to have it fixed, and then I'm without a phone for whatever the turn-around is; my luck, it will be a month.

Actually, it's $20 to repair, $175 to have Samsung repair, $400 to get another one secondhand.

Options:

  • Repair
  • Buy LG Optimus G Pro (superior to Galaxy Note 2)
  • Wait for the Galaxy Note 3
  • Buy the Galaxy S4

If it's urgent, get either the LG Optimus G Pro or Galaxy S4.

If it's not urgent, wait for the Galaxy Note 3.

It's $20 for a skilled person with a heat gun to repair. I called it $170 because I would buy the entire LCD module.

I also don't buy used phones.

Edit: Cronos, where are you seeing the Optimus G Pro for $550? On Amazon, I'm seeing it for anywhere from $750 to $1200.

If you don't buy used phones and you don't want to repair the S4 or HTC One gives you maximum value. Worst thing valuewise would be a full price Note 2.

If you were willing to swappa I would just get another Note 2 if you like it.

HTC One is right out. I don't do non-removable batteries.

I'm going to get the Optimus G Pro. I've used the OG and it's a nice phone. The Pro has a higher-res screen, same screen size, and 32gb internal storage, with a Snapdragon 600 quad. Im going down to AT&T to see about buying one.

You WANT to buy a new phone. Just go ahead with it.

Oh, you're absolutely right about that!

But, had I not shattered my Note II's screen, I would not be buying one.

Which, BTW, I did. Spent about 30 minutes playing with the Optimus G Pro demo unit at my AT&T store, then I grabbed a rep and bought one. Only issue I've found so far is my mount is too wide. The G Pro is about "half a Note II bezel" thinner than the Note II.

MADE DAMN SURE the insurance was put on this time, too.

DOnt wanna sound like a jackass.

But as expensive as the Note 2 is (i know cuz I have one) why didnt you spend an extra 20 on the samsung rubber edged case or 40 on the otterbox?

Otterboxes and other cases like it are hilariously ugly and bulky. I had a thin snap-on cover that sticks up a mm or so over the edges of the phone, but I guess it hit the concrete deck in the back yard at just the right angle...

I'm not sure if the Note is designed like an Sx, but if the glass goes all the way to the edges too then any fall to the edge or corners will crack that glass. It's a common problem.

I got a case for my S3 that makes it easier to grab and hold. So it's a bit of a tradeoff.

The glass goes all the way to the edge, and is actually beveled a little - so it sits higher than the surrounding trim.

I'm actually going to try replacing the glass a little down the road - I just didn't want to fool with it, spend the time and end up breaking it, and still have to buy a new phone.

Funny thing is I dropped it at work once from about face height onto concrete with no case, and didn't have any damage except a small scratch on the trim. Guess I was just lucky that first time.
