Why don't you just get an external enclosure and just put your hard drive in it. After that just plug it in the USB port. Newegg has a bunch to choose from:

external enclosures

I don't know which one is the best. But I am sure people in this forum probably know.

That still doesn't solve her ghosting problem or the guy who think he knows what he's doing.

I think you should buy a PCI IDE controller card. It plugs into any PCI port and allows 2 additional IDE connections. If you did that, then you can have all 3 harddrives in w/ ZERO problems theoretically ;)

Are they WD or Maxtor drives? Both programs are available on the manufacturer's websites.

it should solve the ghosting problem b/c if they get an external case, there'd be no ghosting needed. She would just keep the 30gb by itself and then add on 2 new drives.

btw, caitlion, your mom's BF is a dick and retard.

...easy man! I am just trying to give her some advice and trying to help somebody. Her personal problems are hers and not ours and like the other person said the external enclosure would solve her ghosting problems. I believe getting and external enclosure would be easier for her since she says that she knows little about computers. There is no need to even open the case.

Regards

you can have 4 drives total.
primary master, primary slave, secondary master, secondary slave. If you only have one cd/cdrw/dvd (optical drive), then you should have space left for 3 other drives, all of which can be HDD's
I have this config right now - one cdrw, and 3 HDD's

edit: it does seem like the guy helping you is 'teh st00pid'

Some do. But I say you just try it yourself. At least you're willing to learn:)

are you sure?? i haven't done it recently but i'm pretty sure the maxtor will copy from another hd to a maxtor as long as maxtor is the brand of one of the two hd's.

How much data do you have to transfer?

It only took me about 35 minutes to Ghost a drive with about 28GB of data.

sounds like he's just trying to copy the HD over using MS Copy command. that WON'T Work and he WILL get an OS error.

ghosting or cloning has to be done on a separate boot. usually you will boot to the cd or a floppy in order to accomplish a ghost or a clone. even if the ghost program is initiated in the OS on the main hd, it will still have to reboot to finish.

Click "quote" in the little bar under his post, and that is what the forum software spits out.
