Replacing my desktop w/ a dedicated server

I'm looking to set up a server at home to take care of printing and media sharing (pictures / videos / music) since my desktop has been doing the task. However, it's a bit on the heavy side for power consumption and I'd rather not have it up 24/7. I'd like to be sure these files are all accessible from my desktop (wired) and PS3 (wired) as well as my laptop (wireless). As far as the throughput is concerned, will including a switch behind the router help anything? I'd assume streaming from the wired server to a wired device (say the PS3) would be faster through the switch than it would be the router, am I correct in that assumption or is there not much speed to gain there?

Depends on the switch / router. Really need more information. 100Mbps router to 100Mbps switch: Not a lot if anything. 1000Mbps switch? Yes, you should see and improvement there etc. 1000Mbps router. Again maybe. Depends on the router and switch.

Good point, I guess that's pretty relevent :)

I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure my router is only 100mbps, it's the stock router / modem from Verizon which comes with Fios, so I can only assume. So ok, I guess the answer is clear, if I want to run a gigabit switch, my wired devices will have no throughput issues, and the wireless device(s) will be limited only by 802.11g.
