Replacing mid-90s Apple monitor for grandmother

My 80-yo grandmother uses an Apple computer she purchased back in 199x ... maybe 94 or 96? This thing's modem is a 14.4 if that pegs it for you. She uses this for word processing, and for the last year+ has been talking about buying a new $2000+ (Apple) computer so she can do ... more word processing. She doesn't even go online.

I was visiting for xmas and noticed her monitor is really, really dim and fuzzy. She shouldn't have to deal with that, and if she's not going to buy a new computer anytime soon I want to replace it for her. The monitor connector is some freakishly proprietary Apple invention -- not standard VGA.

Does anyone know:
1) What the funky apple monitor connector is called?
2) If old apples will work with new monitors?
3) If I can get an adaptor to standard VGA so she can get a new monitor?

Thanks!

Behold the power of eBay 😉

If that one doesn't work for you, I found a dozen others by putting "msc monitor adapter" into the eBay search field. These should allow you to use any CRT (or Even LCD monitor) you wish to with her Mac. Although I bet you might be able to find a good deal on the old iLamps now that the new hotness of the G5 iMac is out in force.

That looks to be right. Apple at one point used a 2 row, 7+8pin setup for their monitors, instead of the 3x5 DB-15 setup.
