Replacing hard drive Philips Freevents

Dear all,

I was recently hoping to upgrade the hard drive on my Philips Freevents x51 (60GB just isn't enough) but when I opened the screw-on cover on the bottom, I found it concealed only the fan, not the hard drive as I expected. I'm thinking that I need take the machine apart completely, but don't want to do that if I don't have to.

Does anyone have any experience with this model? Any advice on how to get at the hard drive? More importantly, does anyone know if it's at all possible to replace the hard drive? The user manual is next to useless and there is no information about it that I can find either on the Philips site or on the net.

And finally, if it turns out that I CAN change the drive, any suggestions on what to go for? (make, specs, etc)

What you need is the tech manual that shows how to remove and replace major components like RAM, drives, etc. I did an extensive search, and I found that philips.com doesn't even acknowledge the existance of any laptops or notebooks under their own brand. :roll:

It took some digging just to find a U.S. toll free support phone number, but when I finally got through the annoying voice only controlled decision tree, the support person couldn't find it, either. :shocked:

Conclusion -- NEVER buy a Philips brand computer.

Back to your problem...

Here's the returns for a Google search for "Philips Freevents x51". If you can find a vendor in your part of the world that sells Philips laptops, ask them if they know where you can get tech info for the machine.

I'm guessing Philips is just rebadging another manufacturer's machines. If someone knows who actually makes it, you may be able to get more info from that manufacturer.

If you go back to dig carefully into your machine and find the drive, get the actual model of the drive, and check the specs to determine the interface is PATA or SATA and anything else that will give you a clue about the largest drive your machine will support.
