I'm replacing my laptop HTPC with a Zotac Zbox AD10. Have Win7 setup on it and XBMC.

I have HDMI out to a splitter to a 20"touchscreen and the other to a new Onkyo TX-NR515 which feeds my Vizio 47" LCD and 5.1 surround speakers.

Currently, I don't have a way to play optical discs. I don't think that we would use it that often - we may have played a dozen DVDs in the past year.

However, I think i need to build that option in, just in case.

Would you recommend a blu ray drive hooked up to the HTPC or a standalone player? If standalone, which one or should I get a PS3?

thanks for your help.

i'd do it via the htpc, that way you only have to worry about a single source

Oppo BDP-93.

Basically an all-in-1 HTPC with blu ray, sacd, dvd-a, dvd, cd, netflix, youtube, blockbuster, mkv, flac, mp3, avi, iso, mpeg, dsd, you name it playback.

while the oppo is prob the best thing out there it is expensive. PS3 isn't bad and is cheaper, even cheaper is buying a BR drive for the PC and using the included software (most likely powerDVD or WinDVD) or you could purchase anyDVD and play in any player you want. With lifetime updates its the cheapest option, however you lose menu support with anydvd

Scratch the ISO support on the Oppo.

  • Additional Disc & Media Formats - Additional disc and file formats, such as DVD, audio CD, HDCD, Kodak Picture CD, AVCHD, MP4, DivX, DivX Plus HD, MKV, FLAC, WAV and other audio/video/picture files on recorded discs, USB or eSATA drives can be played back on the BDP-93.
pretty sure that means ISOs are supported. I could be misreading.

"Per request from the studios, the ISO file playback function has been removed in this firmware version. The previous firmware had the ability to play ISO files, but it was an undocumented function and was never officially announced or supported. Future firmware revisions will no longer support ISO playback."

The problem I believe was the Oppo could read ISO rips of DRM protected material like DVD-A and SACD.

...which is why I didn't update my firmware yet. So I can play burned copies of my SACDs :D
