Replacing DVD With DVD/CDRW?

Can this be done? If so, is it a straight out swap or are their BIOS/connection issues? Different sizes or one size fits all?
It's for a Compaq 14XL345.

You should check the HP/Compaq Site. Laptops use all proprietary tech so you'll need to get a drive from the manufacturer.

Not always. I was just able to install one of the clearanced $29.99 Toshiba DVD-RW drives in my Compaq X1000. The critical issues are:

Is the new drive the same make as the old drive. My original CD-RW/DVD Combo drive was a Toshiba SD-R2312. The new drive is a Toshiba SD-R6012. Therefore I was able to swap the faceplate off the old Combo drive and install it on the new DVD Burner drive.

The other main consideration is the new drive configured the same. Master/Slave or CSEL on laptop drives are configured through the firmware. My old drive was configured CSEL(Cable Select) while the new DVD burner was a M/S(master/slave). If the drives are not configured the same initially, you must be able to find the correct firmware version to make the drive work properly in a laptop it was not originally sold for. Not a huge deal, but not all drives(or manufactures) have different firmware available. I was lucky, the Toshiba drives have available firmware to change the drive configuration. GP

 
Yeah, and for a hundred bones you can probably just go to the manufactures Site and get the right drive that'll slide right in. Best not to take chances with firmware updates and guessing about whether a drive will fit.
 
After a quick perusal of Compaq's (or is it HP....) craptastic Site, it would appear there isn't even an option to purchase a combo drive for that machine.

Also, that Toshiba drive you linked to is NOT intended for the Presario mentioned by the thread starter.

Link to a drive he can use and you'll be a hero....

...nor was the drive I linked to intended for a Compaq X1000...yet it was made to work, quite easily also. GP
