Replacing dvd drive in 360

A friend of mine gave me a 360 because the dvd drive didnt work. ive been using it as a MCE. but id like to try to replace the broken dvd drive. its out of warranty and the seal was broken before it ever got to me.

i have it disassembled right now. i know i have to dump the dvd FW and flash it to a new drive, but i dont know all of the specifics. is there a quick tutorial out there with links to the appropriate software?

i dont want to use modded FW or anything, i just want the dvd drive to work like a stock 360.

tia,

I hope this helps http://www.clevermod.com/index.php?article=11

I don't much about the 360, but from what I've gathered each DVD drive is unique to that system so you are right inflashing the firmware to get it to think that you are putting in the appropriate drive. And you also apparently need an actual hitachi or Samsung DVD drive made for 360 as it's not like Xbox1 where you could just put any new DVD drive in.

Couldn't you buy a HD-DVD add-on drive instead? They've come down in price and if you've got a hi-def TV they look amazing.

Do the HD drives read regular DVD movies or games? I'm pretty sure no, so if that's what he's looking for it probably won't suit his needs.

I dunno why they wouldn't. I thought HD-DVD drives were backwards compatible with standard DVD's? I've got a 360 with the HD-DVD add-on at home so I can try it. Will report back.

No, you cannot play games from the Add-on Drive. It would basically be a DVD / HD-DVD player.

It'd probably be easier to just repair the current DVD drive. Depending on what's wrong with it, I could fix it for you 🙂

Theres 1 of 3 problems wrong with it: 1) DVD laser is busted--solution: buy a new laser (15-20 dollars shipped from china off fleabay) 2) DVD spindle drive has so much crap in it that it's not spinning anymore--solution: clean crap out of it(free, as long as u know how to disassemble and reassemble the DVD spindle properly and realign it) 3) DVD circuit board is busted--solution: buy a new circuit board, although it's nearly as expensive as a new drive at this point.

Speaking of which, I happen to have an Xbox 360 DVD drive for sale 😉 YGPM

Sounds like a good route to go. You'll need someone who is technical enough to rip your firmware and put it on a new drive.
