Replacing DVD/CD-RW Drive

I have an older compaq 2200 laptop...say about 4-5 years old. The CD-RW/DVD-ROM went out of it and I need to replace it...I found one specifically for it on ebay for 90.00+s&h and in the description he states that it will fit in the caddy and needs the faceplate.

This leads me to think that I can get any optical drive and put it in there as long as the connections are the same...(IDE?) I really hate to spend $90.00 on a drive if I don't have to.

How can I find out if any dvd-rw will fit correctly?

Newegg sells notebook optical drives, most all of which should (emphasis on should) work for you.

even os they do not say so, they are all pretty much the same. Th eonly difference is that you may have to buy an adpater to use it with your laptop, but your laptop should have it already if it needs one.

It simply is not economicall viable for a company to make their own specific optical or hard drives, but what they made do is like Gibson said, use an adapter. But they used a COTS drive originally, so the adapter takes it from the standard connector and makes it theirs...

try to find the part number of compatible drives also.. and search based on that.. you will probably find something cheaper... there are tons of overpriced used notebook part websites.. type your computer in there.. find the model number, then search that on ebay..
