My E4500's cooler came with grey stuff on the bottom already (I think the preapplied type is called "pads" right?).

So I want to get a cooler 7 pro. And also some better thermal compound. I will have to remove the stock compound before applying the new one, right? How do I remove it? Any necessary tools?

Yes, you will have to remove the current thermal material. Just use something like rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. Then wipe it off with a lint-free material like a coffee filter.

I just use rubbing alcohol. It works fine and is cheap if you already dont have some. Just use some toilet tissue and poor some alcohl on it and wipe the CPU surface clean.

No minimum age for rubbing alcohol, otherwise known as isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol. It's a good bit more lethal than ethanol and I'm not even sure you could get a decent buzz from it anyway. Looks like as little as a tablespoon or two is considered toxic when taken orally.

Just make sure there is no lint after you wipe with the toilet tissue. That's why most people prefer the coffee filters. Some toilet paper isn't too bad, but the softer kinds shed like crazy.

Wait, we are not suppose to drink this stuff?

Well about the age requirement, I know where I live(Illinois) I can buy it at the age of 17. I remember buying it when I was 15 though.

There is a requirement in the UK though.

If you are getting an artic cooler 7, just leave the thermal paste it comes with on. It's supposed to be as good or better than as5.
