Replacing broken 3com 24 port switch

We had a power surge and it took out one of our 3com SuperStack 3 switches. Im looking for a replacement switch that is not a 3com. Ive had too many problems with ports going out on the switchs and ive had to replace a lot of 3com NICs in the last year.

Any suggestions on a 24 port switch that has similar specs as this:

Total ports: 24 autosensing 10/100 Ethernet, 1 matrix

Media interfaces: 10/100BASE-TX/RJ-45

Ethernet switching features: Store-and-forward, full-/half-duplex auto-negotiation, port trunking, 802.1Q VLAN support, 802.1p traffic prioritization

Management: Embedded Web server for direct management

Specs

Im also letting them know that this is what happens when they say no to our request to purchase a line conditioner. 😀

There's really no way to tell the actual OEM manufacturer for those Dell switches; I've called them to find out but nobody was able to tell me.

I've had very good experience w/ 3com switches...once some ports went bad and they sent us a replacement unit w/ no question asked.
I think it's the quality of power at your location that you need to take care of first.

yeah put a UPS in to protect the switches also consider some cat5 surge suppressor.

3Com should replace the switch ... did you check?

Thats a good idea, I assumed it was out of warranty. I'll look into that today. 😀

MrBaseball, don't buy the Dell 3424. The 3324 was a great little switch. The 3424 is totally different inside.

SMC makes very solid switches. I'd also look at Linksys and D-Link.

ITjunkie,

You'll find that foundry, cisco, extreme switches are all about the same price.

People think cisco is expensive - but if you negotiate properly with the big 3 they all come out about the same price wise.

I called 3com today and the switch is still under warranty 😀

It looks like the switch was plugged into a surge protector/powerstrip. I think they will be more receptive to the idea of a line conditioner now 😀 Is there anything else I should have hooked up to prevent this from happening again? How effective is a surge suppressor compared to a line conditioner?

go the full blown UPS .. I use the smart-UPS from APC nothing under 1400 personnally. also if it's just ports on the switch going out install the line filters for Cat5 from APC (like $10 each line) If this is for home and you can play/trade PM me I got some high end routers surplus to my needs too. (I have 20 ports in the house and a 48 port lan system in the garage, I worked for a router maker for some time and learned alot of neat tricks..) Surge suppressors only last a few months before the metal in them wears out and than they are just glorified outlet strips.
