Replacing bios chip? or fixing it?

I get a "BIOS checksum error" when i try and boot with an MSI 6501 aka:K7D Master L. I believe this is a fault with the BIOS code rather than the settings, as the clear cmos jumper does nothing, so i may have to replace the chip.

Before i try replacing it though it does ask for a system disk. I give it a windows boot disk with the flash utility and thr latest bios on it. But it dosent recognise it, why not? Could i fix this by getting it to recognise the disk and flashing a new bios?

Yup - I've fixed that same bios problem with a system boot disk ( floppy ) with the bios and the flash utility.

dumb question but have u tried removing the battery as well? some intel boards dont clear cmos with just a jumper short.

Ive tried a new battery yes, no go.

The drive is now recognising the floppy, but i get a disk I/O error, and it asks me to insert a new disk. Unusual thing is it did that on my main rig too.... So i tried another disk, same thing, and the third disk, the one im using now works on this main rig, but still gives me an I/O error on the one with the botched bios. Any ideas?

I tried some windows 98 boot image thing, filled up the whole floppy. It said "starting windows 98" (it didnt start windows 98 it just hanged) instead of I/O error. So, what will boot this thing? A disk made in Xp wont do it, that image didnt do it, im gonna try a dos 6.22 and a windows ME boot disk.

hmm, if it hangs i would look at the bios. are the drives sata or ide? have you tried removing all other cards, hdds from the system and running just the floppy, or just the cdrom? i would try this next.

The CD isnt plugged in, and i dont even think the IDE is plugged in the right way anyways. Ill try that.

Ive had a little sucess in accessing a floppy drive though. The MS-DOS 6.22 boot disk tried to install dos, failed as it couldnt find a drive (why i think my drive isnt plugged in correctly) and the left me at the A: prompt. However when i try to run AWDFLASH.EXE it dosent work, gives me an error "cannot read from drive A:" I downloaded the latest version, called it AWDFLASH2.exe and it still didnt work

Ah screw it. Ill get a new mobo and sell this one.... I updated the bios at long last, then restart oh and it dosent like the CPU that just updated the bios 2 minutes ago, displays nothing on the screen. Stuff it.
