Sorry to have my first post be so long, but I've been doing a ton of research and I have a few questions.
First of all, I'm looking for a new computer as my 700MHz 128MB dell laptop with dual booting on a 10GB HD is a little slow/old(2000)/breaking down. Especially for my
habits, which involve photo/video editing (majorly), some 3D modeling/rendering, lots of music, watching video, a fair amount of graphics programming, with a windows/linux
combo. Looking for a close-to-barebones system as I plan to upgrade later, but I need to get a system, any system, soon that will have a future. And on a budget to boot.
So MonarchComputer.com looks good to make a custom system, as I would not trust my own building skills. Not sure if it's too limiting though.
I've researched into compatibility everywhere, but still not sure about things, here's my temporary plan:
Case:
Antec SLK3700-BQE Quiet Mid-Tower (Black) $89
'cause it's cheap, looks good from reviews, hoping that the motherboard's onboard sound will work with the included 350W PS
Motherboard:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum ($137 w/o SLI, $179 with)
Don't plan to overclock much, but you never know. I'd want to get some memory that would allow it?
Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 512k 90nm $129
Winchester? it won't say
Heat Sink:
AMD Certified Operaton/64/FX Heatsink $8
Memory....?
Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PRO $171
Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PT $133
Patriot PDC1G3200LLK $133
(All DDR(400) PC3200, 2x512)
Hard Drive:
SATA Seagate ST380817AS 80GB 7200-rpm $69
SATA Western Digital WD800JD 80GB 7200-rpm $64
(Hope to sometime get another(?) to RAID-0)
Opticals:
Lite-On SOHR-5232K CD-RW/DVD-R $34
(future?) NEC ND-3520A/GNB $59
Floppy:
Mitsumi 1.44MB 3.5" Floppy $20
Network: (onboard)
Sound: (onboard)
Video:
ATI (Sapphire) Radeon X600 Pro 128MB $96
(temporary, I drool over the lower-end of the Quadro FX's)
Monitor: (buying used separately)
Viewsonic 19" G90fb Flatscreen CRT $125
I need a new rig soon, so I'm willing to get some components now I can use until I have the money to upgrade.
Any personal feelings about whatever piece of hardware GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks!
