Replacing an Asus P5n-e SLI

I just built a system and I am just having a terrible time with this motherboard.

It hard-locks when I run two sticks of ram (even with the timings set manually), even with one stick it doesnt feel like its running well...the 4th ram slot legitimately does not even work...I am having wierd problems with the USB ports...I just dont want it anymore.

It's about to head back to newegg (with the restocking fee waived) but first I have to order something new.

I'd prefer not to spend over $200 on it but I want something stable.

It needs to support my e6750 and a single x1950pro (I never plan to do SLI so that doesnt matter). The ram I have is 2gb (2x1) DDR800. Onboard sound isnt something I need 100% but it would be nice. Onboard ethernet is something I want for sure.

Overclocking is not something I usually do other than to mess around every now and then (I like my stuff quiet and if I have to turn up the fans to keep my OCed chip cool...no good) but I tend to feel that good overclockers tend to be good boards in general.

Thanks for the help.

Are you sure you don't want to try another one with the 650i chipset...?

When you get all the settings right, and obviously all the RAM slots work, it is quite a performer (with the "unlinked" memory settings for almost any divider imaginable...)

I can try the same chipset, I just dont want another P5n-e...the problems I have been reading about it all scare me off from that particular board.

The unlinked memory doesnt excite me that much since I dont overclock it and will be running with stock timings etc. (also I have read reports of severe instability on the p5n-e when running unlinked)

Odd. The P5N-E SLI is indeed a quirky mobo, and a temperamental one at that!

I guess I've been lucky with mine. I've been running a E6400@2.9GHz with 4x1GB at 800MHz for a couple of months now and after working out the kinks it works fine. My only beef is that I can't get hibernation to work.

At any rate...at this point I'd recommend the P35 mobos JustaGeek linked, if you are indeed getting a new mobo.

The reviews on that Asus seem bad...

The linked gigabyte looks good but I think I would spend the extra and get the GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...GIGABYTE%2bGA-P35-DS3R

It is the same price range as my P5N. My only concern is the cooling system with its backplate. I have seen it mentioned that you cannont use CPU coolers with a custom backplate so my question is, are there still (either currently or in the future) going to be relatively quite cooling options that dont require a backplate?
