Replacing an 8800GTX with an 8800GT

I decided that I am going to replace my 8800GTX with the HR03 Plus for one of these -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814143117

I am mainly going to do it since I can get rid of the GTX while it is still worth something.

I am getting that 8800GT through work for $280, what should the performance difference be between my GTX at stock? I know the standard 8800GT can be extremely close to the GTX on most things, I am just curious about that overclocked model.

All of my gaming is at 1680x1050.

Thanks.

i'd say that at 1680x1050 you're not going to see a huge difference... maybe a bit cooler, and you can probably offset your costs by selling the GTX :)

I was reading a review on that particular card and it looks like it can match or beat the GTX in quite a few games. This actually might be a good idea.

Now I just have to resist the urge to eat the cost and try to blend the 8800GTX in the blendtec blender I got for Christmas. :D

Daiquiri 8800GTX anyone?

I am pretty sure I am not going to do that, I can get money out of the thing.

If the card was dead....then most definitely I would.

There's no doubt of a $400 market for a GTX right now. I had an HR-03 Plus equipped EVGA GTX I sold on ebay last week of November. I held out for a G92 GTS. Looking back, I regret the decision!!

You'll get several opinions (and it sounds like your mind's made up), but I'm telling you, you'll look back and not see many ++'s.

If you've had your GTX for six months or better, I urge you to stay put. You're gaining nothing by going with current product. And while benchmarks show G92's able to run with a GTX, I think there's more to the picture. 384 bit bus, 768MB memory. You'll be giving it up. It can make a difference. Maybe not with all games, but with some.

I have no juicy benchmarks, no data. But take a look at your GTX right now. Look at that freakin cooler. Have you clocked it to Ultra specs yet? You can.

Sell now, get $400. Subtract fees. Sell later for worst case at $300. It will always be worth more than a G92 GT or GTS. And in no way, ever, are either going to outperform it. Clock it to Ultra specs, and sit tight..

Well, my mind is not made up, though I do have the 8800GT on the way. Worst case I can just sell it here for what I paid for it (seems I got about 20 bucks less than what they go for on the egg, I figure I can get at least what I paid for it).

I still have not made up my mind totally, but I am still leaning on keeping the GTX. Worst case I can just use the GT to replace a 7800GTX in my other system, though only guests and friends play on that machine.

You should get $400 for it on ebay. I sold my 8800gtx on ebay for $530 two weeks before the 8800GT launch :)

Hey, How much did you get for it? I have one and gave it to my little bro. Maybe he'd want to sell it and get an 8800GT?

Also, SteelSix, what kind of cooler is that on that card? It looks like a beast!! I have the Ultra with the stock cooler, and I was thinking of getting an aftermarket cooler, BUT what you said further up in the thread about regretting selling yours makes me want to hold on to it. My eVGA step up ends on Mar. 13, so I was hoping the new GTX or Ultra comes out by then and I can just upgrade that way.

And I agree with the bonus of having a 384-bit bus and the 768MB memory. I have a 24" monitor and with my old GTS 640mb I was having some choppiness. With the Ultra, no problems at all!! Keep the GTX!! At least to find out what's coming.

That's an HR-03 Plus cooler. It's nice, but honestly, it doesn't provide any overclock headroom that a stock cooler with fan speed bump would provide, at least not on GTX/Ultra cards. It did dramatically lower GPU temps though.

Your case, you have premium coin invested in the Ultra and have Step-Up good thru March. I wouldn't bank on G100 releasing in time, but you never know. For sure will be the dual PCB G92 card. Keep your eye on it for step-up. Rumored to provide 150-175% Ultra performance.

Should be less than what you paid for the Ultra though. It's a tough call for an Ultra owner. Selling outright, $450ish now, $350ish thru G100 launch I'd guess. Weigh that vs. step-up.

So, do you have any reference for me to look at for this dual G92 card? Yes, I was hoping to be able to step up to something that will kick the Ultra's butt. My deadline is March 13, so hopefully something good comes out by then. I was hoping that the next GTX would come out by then, but from what i've heard, it doesn't seem likely, but who knows.

Thanks for the input and if you have a site that talks more about the dual G92, I'd be happy to read it.

There's very little info so far. We've already seen pics of ATI's dual GPU card. Apparently nVidia's countering with a dual PCB card. Fud or real, here's what I found:

"NVIDIA currently has two major cards in the works. The first is the dual-chip-dual-PCB card, known as GeForce 8950GX2 in the rumor mill, and the next generation "GeForce 9800 Ultra," also known as D9E (or G100 by some). The dual-PCB card is slated for launch in late January/early February to fight the soon-to-be-unveiled R680 card from ATI, better known as Radeon HD 3700X2. Last we heard R680 is suppose to be a monster, mainly due to some impressive CrossFire scaling, and could finally be the card to take the throne from GeForce 8800 Ultra.

The GeForce 8950GX2 is then suppose to bring back the performance crown to NVIDIA with two G92 chips on separate PCBs, much like the GeForce 7950GX, according to channel sources.

One and a half month later, NVIDIA will introduce the next generation high-end card based on the D9E chip. GeForce 9800, or whatever the final name will be, is suppose to sport performance similar to that of the GX card, but with a single chip. 1 TFLOPS is the magic figure everyone is talking about..."

Just wanted to throw this out there.

Pluses to "upgrading" to 8800GT
1) Less power consumption
2) Less heat
3) HDCP supported when running overscan adjustment/monitor scaling (8800GTX only supports HDCP if you have overscan adjustment disabled/monitor scaling disabled)
4) Perhaps a few extra bucks in your pocket
5) PurevideoHD 2nd gen video processor

Minuses
1) Louder (single slot cooler)
2) No triple SLI support
