Replacing A8N-SLI chipset fan with 4cm fan

The new one runs at 4200rpm and has normal 3-pin variable speed ability.
Just wondering how it will work in the power plug set to 8000+ rpm for the old 3cm fan. Will it run at 4200rpm or what? There doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the settings for the mobo fan plug. Failing that, are 4pin molex adapters available that I can just plug it into my PSU?

Any experts out there?

Your PSU will deliver 12v to the MB 3 pin fan headers. If your fan is plugged directly in to one of those headers, it will run its' maximum rated speed which you say is 4200 rpm. You can use a freeware program called Speedfan to control the voltage to those 3 pin MB headers and thus slow the fan speeds down. This is done by setting desired temperatures for controlling. You can also use one of these to reduce the speed and noise if desired: http://www.bestbyteinc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=FSC-ZAL-FM2

Yes an adapter will work....one like this: http://www.svcompucycle.com/3pinto4pinad.html however, you will still get the full 12v unless using something like the fanmate2 from the above link.

Thank you so much!
The reason I asked is because that fan plug is automaticaly speed controlled by the MB through a default "Q-Fan" feature. This runs it at at least 8000rpm, and alters speed to harmonize with the CPU fan (according to the MB manual). I was wondering what would happen when I put a 4200rpm rated fan on it.
This chipset runs HOT. So it may be a good idea to run it at a full 4200rpm all the time.
Additionaly, I have heard that some people have had issues running Speedfan on this MB.

That very well could be, I use an Abit IC7 MB and Speedfan works fine. I have the Q-fan equivalent on my board disabled. Speedfan and my fanmate2 take care of my needs. Yes, it may be wise to run your new fan full speed if heat is an issue. Even at full speed, it should be quite a bit less noisy than that 3cm fan at 8000rpm. And yes, if Q-fan is enabled, it will control the voltage to that fan and make it run slower. You should be able to set the Q-fan ratio to make it run faster, the closer the ratio is to 1, the more voltage to the fan and the faster the speed......

Thanks very much!
I'll be picking up a new fan tommorow, and see how it goes. Ya, these cheap A8N-SLI stock fans are notorious for noise, as most of them are unbalanced and start to vibrate - quite the noise at 8000+ rpm!

Works like dream. Runs at about 3750 most of the time. Chipset actualy runs much cooler with the new, slower fan!

so what fan did you get and can you here it over anything else like the cpu fan. i have a a8n-sli and the stock fan is very noisy.

I got an Ainex/Adda. I can't hear any difference withit on or off, at full power. My whole system is seriously quiet.

What model did you put in? Where did you find it?
Thanks.

I also have ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe and this might be the way to reduce chipset fan noise, but i didn't understand one thing..
How did you (TheNiceGuy) put the 4cm fan in the stock cooler? It's larger than the cooler right? Did you replace also the stock cooler?

Thanks

Hey, I just saw your post. I am very annoyed with the chipset fan on my a8n sli deluxe board as well. This is the second board I bought, the first one's fan was way too loud (vibration). Did you get a new fan? Does it work? Is it quiet? Please let me know what I can do AND how to install it. I am not as computer savvy as everyone else here in the forum. Thanks!

I have 2 6800GT boards in SLI both with NV Silencer coolers on them so the cooler sits right over the chipset. Most of the aftermarket options sit too high. My chipset started buzzing real bad just about a week ago man is it annoying especially when you go out of your way in every component to make it quiet. Anyone know of a low profile replacement like the one in there already?
