So, my aftermarket car stereo was stolen. The left the mounting bracket and wiring harness. If I got a similarly sized stereo, could I just put it in and use the same wiring harness?

rarely does that work. It would have to be the same manufacturer and probably around the same generation of radio.

I thought wiring harnesses were for the car not the stereo?

I'm assuming he meant that the OEM wiring was there with it's harness plus the aftermarket wiring harness that plugs into the OEM one that converts to whatever the manufacturer was of the head unit.

depending where they cut the wires...if all the OEM wiring and connectors are still intact, you can just get a new harness and new aftermarket deck that fits the open, then you are good to go.
