Replacing a KT7A-RAID...What would you get..?

aircooled

Lifer
I've got an Abit KT7A-RAID. I don't really care about the RAID part but just wanted the extra IDE connections (I'll get a promise card next time).

I want to replace the motherboard ONLY rigtht now (Duron 800, blah blah blah...see rig on sig), but I want to upgrade to an AthlonXP shortly afterwards.

What mobo do you recommend...?

TIA

I guess my question could be re-phrased to:

What's a good mobo without a highpoint controller built in that will handle my Duron800 and also let me upgrade to an AthlonXP?

Without the HPT controller? Why? There's nothing wrong w/it, and you get two extra IDE channels for about $20 more.

OK, it's your money. How about the Abit KR7A? Have you checked AT's KT266A mobo roundup?

If you want to only upgrade the mobo and still wanna use the sdram and the old duron I'd go with the ECS K7S5A. It's dirt cheap and has had relatively good reviews re: stability, etc. (NO O/C ing abilities tho' if you're into that).

The ECS K7S5A takes both DDR and sd RAM so you can upgrade your RAM when the prices drop again... 😉

good luck

MichealD, I've just had alot of 'flakeyness' from the HPT controller. But when I pop my buddies Promise card in there, it's rock solid.
I've got the newest HPT 370 BIOS and drivers and I use winXP, but any drive I plug into the HPT connectors becomes unstable (files I move to it are corrupt etc..).

It very well may just be this particular mobo. Regardless, I'll need a new mobo to use an athlonXP and would rather use an add on card for extra IDE devices this time.

Thanks for the replies...

aircooled,

What revision nember is your KT7A-Raid board ................ ?

You may be good to go for the XP, if you have V. 1.3 or later ..............

ABIT KR7A-133

Kr7A-133. Can't get better for its money.

I especially love the 5 fan headers on the board for all my panaflos.

I'm in the same boat as you. I got a ver 1.1 and I want to go up to XP but I still want to be able to use me 640 megs of SDRAM and have the extra 4 ide connections. I don't wanna go DDR till the ram prices go back down and better Nvidia motherboards start showing up. From what I understand IDE pci cards have kinda slow burst speeds with VIA chipset boards, and I can tell that myself with the Promise 66 card in my k63 computer. maybe we can get an answer soon. I'm considering the ECS board with the dual ram. Maybe the IDE card will work better there.

Yeah, for $52 at newegg, I'm considering the ECS board also. I really don't need to overclock this machine, and I also want to keep the RAM I have for now.
