My rear bumper is cracked/dented and needs replaced on my 2008 RAV4.

I took it to the dealer and they quoted me at $1200 to replace it. This includes labor, replacement bumper, painting, etc...

I've found plenty of places that sell them: (http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/details/QQToyotaQQRAV4QQReplacementQQBumper_CoverQQ20062008QQT760135.html)

I think the cheapest I've found is like $175. Why don't they sell them pre-painted? I don't care if the shade matches perfectly. I just want a silver bumper.

If I have to order it un-painted, and I want to have someone paint it for me, do I do that before I install it? Or do I install the bumper, and then take my whole car to them to have them paint it?

Paint job should cost about $300 at most.

Call up your insurance company if you want to find a shop that do these.

Cost of bumper - you procure at whatever cost you want.

And no, you don't need to compromise. The shop will match the paint - that's what they do. Most will match it perfectly 100%.

Do I install the bumper first and then take it to get painted, or do I get it painted before I install it?

Shop will take care of everything. Either have the shop order the bumper for you or order it yourself and have it delivered to the shop. Let them know you're doing all of this and get a quote from them before hand of course.

I'd also at this point bring it to a shop, just not necessarily the dealer. They can probably go cheaper than 1250.

Have you already looked on ebay for a bumper?

When someone backed into my wife's car and we needed a new bumper I was able to get a new replacement one on there for 300 dollars painted and shipped.

www.car-parts.com I had my grandmother use that to find a fender for her older escort (dealer wanted more than the car was worth)...it was $40 + shipping, came out to about $150 all said and done when it came in to a local mechanic.

Can't tell a color difference even.

i'd paint it first before putting it on, saves hassle of having to tape up the car

rockauto.com has the rear bumper cover for $135

But paint then install if doing it yourself. If not let the bodyshop do as they please.

Common enough car to be able to find one used. Like others said, check car-part.com

Otherwise certifit has the bumpers for 50 bucks:

Wow, thanks for the link. There is an auto-parts place about 30 minutes away that has several 2006-2008 RAV4 silver bumpers in stock for less than $300.

Only thing you need to watch, is a lot of cars, the bumper use clips to hold the ends in place. They sometimes break when removing the bumper. So, you may need to get some new ones either at the dealer or an auto body parts supplier. They are easy to install to either the new bumper or to the car sheet metal, depending on which one, if any, break on you.

You can download the service manual here:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/gmor3i

It is the 2006 model, but should be the same or very
similar to 2008 .. Rear bumper is in this part of the manual:
