Well I am upgrading my video for Battlefield 1942 and am looking for something to replace my ATI Radeon 32m DDR card...I saw that Crucial has a 128m 8500 Radeon for $83 but didn't know if that is a decent card also Sapphire tech has a 8500 for $87 at newegg...anything else I should be looking at? does the game play better with ATI or Nvidia? the only other game I might play is Jedi Knight and maybe SOF II but even that is a stretch..really this system will only be for BF 1942...thanks

FYI, That crucial 8500 is using the same 6ns ram as your present ATI Radeon 32m DDR card.

I'd say any 8500 but that one for starters. Whats your budget limit?

I would like to say about $100 but I will go as high as $130 if I have to maybe even higher if the card is that good, I am usually a cheapass though when it comes to computer hardware :)

I dont know if Best Buy still has PNY 4200's for 80 bucks but that is a very good deal. If you can spend upto 130 I saw Sapphire 9500 for that price on pricewatch. With the 9500 not only will you get DX9 compatibility but a very fast card. Also you can turn one of these into a full fleged 9800 (well maybe not exactly the same clock speed) and all you have to do is install some software.

4200 is generally faster than the 8500 but what about if you want to enable quality features like AF and AA? Then you just end up paying more fer nuthin'.

You'll get similar crappy performance on both, so its a wash. If you want good performance in current games with AA and AF, get a 9500pro or better.

Btw, he already got the Ti4200...so thread = dead.

err... is your rig profile correct?
It's gonna take more then just a video card to make your rig play BF1942 decently.

You may meet the minimum requirements for BF but it's gonna run like a dog until you up that P3 800 processor and up the RAM as well. BF1942, especially in large online games, will eat through clock cycles and RAM and make the game look like a slide show. I run ran it on an athlon 1600+ with 512mb PC133 and GF4200ti/128/4x and it ran ok but not great. In 32+ ppl games I lagged so bad (10-15 fps) and it was video/cpu lag not the web connection or their server.
Now I run a Dell P4 2.66/1gig DDR 3000, R9700 TX and it runs like a champ.
I'd check out the cirrent dell deal in the hot deals forum. Its pretty smokin deal even for a cheapskate ;)
In fact since you already have a dec ent vid card now, you can get the Dim 4550 2.53 for about $360!

It is a relatively intensive game but still does not take much of a CPU to run well -at least mine is supaschmoov at 1024x768 will all the A/V maxed out. You could upgrade the CPU for less than $50 including adapter (or even less by modding the socket).
