Replacing a 8800 GTS 640MB

My video card died and I am going to RMA it, but would like to get something else since it will be recertified. I can spend about a 100 dollars, maybe just a little more. Between ATI and Nvidia would would be the best card to buy that would be better than what I have now.

All the new numbers for the cards from both manufacturers are confusing to determine what is better. I also saw that all the new cards are PCI express 2.0 16. My motherboard is PCI Express 16x but pretty sure it is 1.0. I have the ASUS P5B Deluxe. Wanted to make sure a 2.0 PCI Express card will fit in my board.

Recertified? Does that mean getting a replacement through the really long EVGA warranty and they give you something newish as a replacement?

I have to find an invoice from 2 years ago, wait a day or two to validate the RMA. Then pay to ship the card to them, wait a day or two to check the card, then wait a few days to get them to ship it back. They said I would get a recertified card they have laying around. I thought that means it had been returned with a problem, they fixed it and then will ship to me. They said if they dont have that card I would get something comparable.

I figured it I could spend not too much money and get a better card and it will be new.

Windows 7 64 bit, ASUS P5B Deluxe, Core2duo 2.1GHZ (think it is E6400), 2x1GB DDR2 800 RAM, DVD burner, 2 Dell monitors (Max rez on main monitor is something like 1600 by whatever, whichever is the standard res closest to that number and that is what I play games at.)

I tend to be behind the times on new games. Just bought a house so not much money for games.

I wouldn't worry about getting "recertified" from EVGA. I've had to RMA 2 cards my whole life with them, and in both cases I was returned a higher model card. Both cards appeared brand new, no signs of use at all.

RMA'd a 7900GT, got a 7950GT back.
RMA'd a 8800GTS 320 and got an 8800GTS 512 G92 back

Yea they will probrobly give you a 8800/9800gt.

If you can be w/o your pc for a few days, I would wait to see what you get back before you make any rash decisions like buying a new card you don't need.
