I'm thinking about replacing my soon to be 3 years old Archos 5 IT with something similar, but more modern from a hardware point of view.

The form factor is pretty much ideal, it fits shirt and pants pockets in a pinch, and jacket and coat pockets comfortably.
I will be keeping a more portable and robust phone beside the device, as I'm not looking for a "take anywhere" device. Just something, that when I decide that I might need it, I can still carry on my.
I'm currently using a WiFi-3G bridge to connect the Archos, or Bluetooth tethering with my 3G S40 phone.

The Archos is a great device, especially with the various docks, where it can be used in a variety of roles. I tend not to use them that much, but HDMI out is something I'd really like to have, just in case.

Looking at the offers, it seems a fablet (cause they're fabulous!) is what I'm ultimately looking at. Sadly they're priced very conservatively, and I'm not too hot to grab a last-gen Note. Even that still goes for close to 500 euro for the 32GB version. Twice as expensive as the Archos was almost three years ago.
The Note 2 with 32GB is pegged at 800 euro or so. That's quite ridiculous.
I see that LG and HTC are launching contenders, so I will probably have to take a look at those as well. Though that pen is quite intriguing, especially with capacitive touch screens, that can not be operated with the finger nail or styli for better precision.

Anyone know of anything else, that's in the 300 euro bracket, but packs current-iPhone-baiting performance and specs, while having that around-5-inch diagonal?

No, 7 inch is too big. I wonder why a Nexus 7 costs a third of a Note 2 :S

Have you looked at a used note?

Used notes on ebay go for under ~$350 dollars, I don't know how much that translates to euros, and I suspect come October when the Note 2 comes out, there'll be tons of original notes for even cheaper.

I've been looking at old Notes, could probably get one for around 300 euro through rabates at work...but I think the new one might in fact be much more suitable for my usage patterns. Also, going through work means getting a branded phone, which probably means slower upgrades and general shenanigans.

I guess I'll make a decision around christmas, or even in the new year, to see how the after-christmas-slump in prices goes along.
