Replacing a 04 BMW 325i

I have a 04 BMW 325i for a year now. Nice car, but now that I have a family the car feels a little cramped any time I need to strap in a car seat and take my son somewhere. Granted, this happens pretty rarely, as I have put around 5K miles on it in the year that I have had it.

I can sell the car for what I paid for it a year ago so I get out of it for basically no loss.

I have an issue figuring out what to replace it with. The other "nice" car I had in the past that I really like was a 04 Audi A4. Still a small car however and not one I want to repair again.
What I like is leather interior, bigger interior than the 325i, around $9K, quiet interior, and smooth ride. I am over the driving like I have something to prove.

I am thinking about a Lexus GS300 or GS430 in the second generation, 2001 to 2005. The passenger volume appears to be 100 cf versus the 91 cf of the 325i, so it meets the larger interior requirement. I have heard that Lexus has very quiet interiors. I have also heard that they have very nice interiors as well. I like the interior of the BMW and the Audi before it, very nice fit and finish and I believe the Lexus will match that, from what I have heard.

I can find several in the $8K to $9K range, but many have over 125K miles, but from my understanding these cars are just being broke in at this point, as long as the timing belt has been replaced. Should I be worried with a high mileage Lexus?

The 300 and the 430 of that series both use premimum gas and both get around 19 MPG average. The 430 is really quick when you need it, but that isn't a requirement. I am curious to know if there is a big maintenance difference between the two engines... i.e. one is prone to more or expensive issues.

The other thing I have read is to stay away from the units with navigation as they built in the climate controls in to the headunit and it is an added layer of complexity and I can certainly see how that would be an issue. I would probably replace the headunit anyway so that I can have bluetooth for my phone and that would mean tracking down the manual climate controls and installing them. Not something I want to tackle if I don't have to...

I drive about 13 miles round trip to work when I go in to the office. In the past 6 months though I have probably gone in to the office about 40 days if that. I do most of my work from home. We thought about using just one car but with a small child at home and one of us gone with the only vehicle we don't want to be standed without a way to go to the hospital, doctor, or grandparents at the drop of a hat. Normally not a huge issue but the past two weeks has taught us to be prepared as toddlers are clumsy, so a single vehicle family isn't in the cards for us. Before we had a child we did own just one car, but that is no longer an option.

The other vehicle I have looked at is a Lincoln LS, Zephyr, and MKZ. I have heard great things in reading reviews for them, but not a lot about the longevity of such a vehicle. They appear to be about the same price as the Lexus in my area.

My father in law is a car dealer and comes across all kinds of vehicles so if you have another recommendation please let me know and I'll be sure to check it out. Anything else I should consider given my checklist?

if u do get a 2g gs300 make sure timing belt is done cause its due around 110k last time I looked. I have been in a e46 but I don't think a gs300 is that much bigger.

People say my 1st gen g35 sedan is big but I don't find it any larger then a Camry/accord

One car I like but you won't is a impala. I love them as rentals because they are big and nice sized trunks. Some are 3800 powered cars. Simple car to transport a child in. Interior isn't nice as an a4.

Save a little money and get a Toyota Avalon. They have a very roomy interior (check out the back seat) and are quiet too. They burn regular gas and have several trim levels to choose from.

Well, I sold the 325i for $8400 today...

Now it is time to start searching...

T2urtle, I was able to look at a G2 GS300 today and it isn't much bigger, you are right. It has about 10 extra cf of space... I also looked at a G35 as well and I really like them, but I read that they are expensive to keep on the road. Also looked at the Lincoln LS and that isn't much larger either...

I am wondering if I should just go ahead and look at the LS430 from around 2001 to 2003... about $1500 more than I wanted to look at but appears to be a much larger car for not a lot more money.

Woodie1, if I am not mistaken, isn't the LS430 an upscale Avalon? I will also be sure to check the Avalon out.

LS430 is the premier Lexus car, its the equiv or a BMW 7 Series or MB S class.

The Avalon is just a camry based car on a larger chassis.

The Avalon is built on a stretched Camry platform. I mentioned it since you requested more interior room. You can find them with all different kinds of equipment. They are as quiet and reliable as anything in their price range plus upkeep is reasonable.

I have an 01 GS 300 w/ 205K miles on it. No major mechanical problems with it at all. There are two things to verify if you are going to be buying one. First is the timing belt and the other are the lower ball joints. Other than that it's basic stuff, I had the condenser replaced, brakes a couple of times, windshield cracked. But for a car that's 11 years old and averages about 18K a year, I can't complain. I have a 2 yr old son as well and we haven't had any issues w/ the car seat situation either.

I'm partial to the LS myself 😀

Acura TL or RL - just ensure the transmission is solid or has been replaced under warranty.

Zephyr is the first year of the MKZ - no real complaints from what I've heard but the sportiness is less than the 3-series. Very roomy.

I wouldn't buy a luxury car in the price range you're talking about. Banged dirty and put away wet by the time you get to it. Strange that you want to dump the bmw because it's too small but then consider an A4, also small.

I mainly mentioned the A4 as a point of comparison... not as a consideraton...

I am actually looking in to the Lincoln LS now. Price seems to be pretty cheap and it is a little larger than the 3 series.

If I were to use this as a daily commuter car I would actually up my price range or lower my standards. As it stands I only drive ~4k to 5K miles a year, 40 miles round trip max... That is usually when I make a beer run... other than that I might go in to the office 3 times a month. I am usually hard pressed to run two tanks of gas through in a month.

05+ was built on a dedicated Avalon exclusive platform which also introduced the 2GR-FE 3.5L V6.

It's not a stretched Camry anymore; The Avalon is it's own car that doesn't share the platform with any other.

And it's equipped well enough to piss off many Lexus owners who spent more only to be 1-upped by a lowly Toyota.

The Avalon is wrong wheel drive though. 😛

Big update:
So I sold the car. When out and bought a 2000 V8 LS. Car has check engine light on and was ticking. I replaced the timing chain tensioner, replaced the fuel filter, installed a remote start system, and changed the oil. Car runs much better. Still has some transmission issues, mainly a bad solenoid so it doesn't switch to reverse or drive very quick. Still shifts, just takes a moment.

All was well, it was a project car. Got a good price on it. Then my FiL found a 2003 G35 Coupe. Told my wife about it, and she told me. I came back and said that I thought I needed more room, not less room and fewer doors. She said "we have my SUV for that."

I am now the proud owner of a 2003 G35 coupe with 99K miles. Needs lots of attention, mainly a detail inside, the previous owner had what seems like 200 dogs in this car at all times. Dog hair and slobber all over the place. Good thing detailing is a hobby of mine.

To do list is sell the LS, clean the G35, inside and out, fix the slack in the driver window (already did the passenger side), new tires, paint the spoiler (clear is gone on about 40% of it), tint the windows, update the audio, and have fun driving! I will possibly paint the car as well, it has some spots where it would benefit from new paint.

I'm confused. I thought you needed a bigger car than the 04 325i, but you're replacing it with a 03 G35?

Trust me... when I got the go ahead to get the G35, I was confused as hell myself. I don't wait around and ask questions however...

The downside, I wish I could justify keeping both cars.

So you went through the hassle of buying, fixing, and selling a Lincoln LS just to end up switching from a BMW 325i to an even older G35...?

Yes it is sigh... I turned off TCS and stalled on the auto converter (2000 RPM stall speed lmao) and side stepped the brake.

I didn't go anywhere, but it felt like the front of the car was going to hop away without me if I kept it up. :awe:

It's an awesome car if you aren't needing to launch it or drag race it. I swear it has more interior room than a full size van without the middle seats.
