replacement vid card needed. around geforce ti4200 era...suggestions?

hey guys,

i sold my old computer to my parents. it seems my brother and sister can't keep computers in workin order for more than a month. the video card seems to be shot. the old card was a Gainward geforce4 ti-4200 128mb. i can't seem to find this anywhere so i'd like a replacment that isn't going to break the bank. i guess something from this "time era" which is around the same performance or a card that is newer and inexpensive. it has to be compatible with an ASUS a7v8x mobo and amd 2100+ processor.

would love to hear some suggestions.

thanks guys!

^ FS/FT forum for a ti 4200, and geeks.com also had some recently.

An AGP nvidia 6200 is under $40 at newegg.com, and it's fanless. Staying with an nvidia card instead of switching to ATI might prevent any driver clashes.

thanks for the replies guys.

yes im trying to stress cheap but i don't want to get a lesser quality card. should have noted that 😉

i was trying to elude to the fact if someone was like...hey you can get card X for around $60. this will be better performance than your older card and won't bottleneck with your setup.

in meantime i'll check the suggestions you guys made

thanks a bunch!

The 6200 would be a moderate improvement, the 7300GT is a nice card and enough to run any game around today (not with full eyecandy, but the game yes). The GS isn't too bad either.

Long and short of it, any card with a larger number than 5200 will be faster. Or pretty much any ATI card for sale as new. The more you spend the more your siblings get 😉

i found an ASUS 6200 here: http://www.digitalhotbuy.com/dhbstore/p...y8yvTSWGpd1g23myh4dkfrV3Q10tlN1Lvh1Vs1!-114638847?skuNo=1049149&adSite=PriceGrabber

seems like i won't run into compatibility problems since it's the same brand as the mobo. (right?). is this card any good ,or should i opt for another brand?

also, it doens't seem to have a fan like my other card did...is this going to be an issue?

Motherboard manufactuerers hardly ever have any kind of conflict with video cards. You don't have to specifically go for that brand. I'd go for whichever was cheapest.

They only put a fan on the card if it's needed. It won't be an issue. 6200s run pretty cool.

Please tell me you aren't serious. You have ~21,000 posts, and don't know about Driver Cleaner? Even newbies have no problem running Driver Cleaner, and it should be used when changing from one nVidia card to another, also. I use it when updating drivers, on both ATI and nVidia cards.

To the OP, this is the best card, for the money, in AGP: X1600 Pro. I have the slightly older version of that same card (that one's brand new, that's why it has no reviews yet), and here's what it will do in F.E.A.R. at medium settings, all with 4x AF, although with a 2.4 Ghz Skt 754 A64, and 2 GB of RAM: @ 1024x768, @ 1152x864, @ 1280x960. Actually, this is the exact card I bought 4 or 5 months ago: X1600 Pro.

I would have to say, though, that an XP 2100 probably couldn't "push" any better of a card than this one: 9600 XT, although it might. And if you refuse to buy an ATI card, here's every 7xxx-series AGP card that newegg has: link. Note that nVidia never made either a 7300 GS or a 7300 GT for AGP. And although they're dog slow, compared to an X1600 Pro, here are all of the 6xxx-series cards: link. I honestly wouldn't even consider going with less than a 6600.

cesto: Your link is messed up, but any 6200 will work just as well as the Asus brand.

(. . . and of course I know about Driver Cleaner, but 99% of the time you don't need it if switching between nvidia cards. cesto, if you don't mind using it and finding a used 9600Pro in the FS/FT forum that's a decent choice too.)

cesto look for my freebie thread next week. as it stands i have 3 video cards kicking around and will be giving away either my radeon all in wonder or my radeon 9500 pro, the other may stay with me since it's a 6600gt. as soon as my new parts show you have first dibs if you still need it.

wow that is nice of you. i really appreciate it. i don't mind waiting a week ;]

this is quite crazy. on another forum i was looking to purchase some velvet for my projector screen. someone offered to send me some for free. sure your not the same guy? 😉

looks like i'll be buying alot of beers if you guys ever come to jersey.

nope that was not me. but i have given away stuff in the freebie threads.....gave a half life 2, counter strike source accout to purplehippo, a couple n64 games to digitalcancer, a palm m100 to coolkatz321, and most recently a far cry dvd to glmino all at my own expense. if i have it laying around and there is a need i don't mind forking over a couple bucks to get it to someone that can use it.
