Replacement tweeters for home speakers?

Are these readily available? Anyone know of a good place that carries them? I have some speakers with some pretty crappy tweeters but the rest is decent enough to try salvaging. Thanks.

Parts Express seems to have 'em. Just do a search for tweeters. I never ordered from there, but I know numerous ppl. here have recommended 'em.

Wow, thanks for the link, but now I have no idea what I'm looking for. Cone, dome, RMS, I am completely lost.

You need to find some tweeters with the same mounting dimensions of your current ones. You also need to know the crossover frequency of your system and the spec for the tweeters you want to install. If you don't know it, and it uses a simple capacitor in series with the tweeter, or the same capacitor with an inductor in series with the woofer, you can determine the frequency with the forumla, 1 / 2 x pi x R x C, where R = the impedance of the tweeter in ohms, and C = the value of the capacitor in farads. 1 farad = 10 ^ -6 microfarads (uF).

The other thing you'll have to check is the polarity of the speakers. With most speakers, a positive voltage applied to the + (red) terminal makes the cone (or diaphraghm of a tweeter) go forward. For some reason I have never understood, JBL's use the opposite convention. Cheap commercial speakers could go either way. Also, for reasons I do know, but don't have the time or space to explain, some systems are set up with the tweeters intentionally out of phase with the woofers. The bottom line is, check the wiring on your present tweeters. Start by hooking up your new ones the same way, but you may want to listen to them both ways.

Hope that helps. :)

Did you type all that from memory?!

Do you mean, did I type it cold, or did I cut and paste it? If so, the anwer is, yes, I wrote it cold. I'm an audio design engineer. I design analog hardware, but I know how speaker systems work so I posted an answer with info he needs to make the right decisions.

Besides, we weren't discussing computers, and memory has nothing to do with speaker systems. ;)

Crap, I'm getting so lost. The speakers I'm working on are KLH 9912's and L853's. Can anyone suggest specifically what I should get based on this? I'm on a pretty tight budget, otherwise I'd just buy some nicer complete speakers. I know these aren't audiophile level, but they're plenty good for me at the moment except for the tweeters. One in the L853's is blown and the ones in the 9912's beep not-so faintly when cranked up.

Finding the right tweeter isn't going to be the easiest thing in the world and most likely won?t be worth the effort when you?re dealing with something like KLH. If your willing to take the time to install new tweeters I'd leave the KLH's alone and save your money for a kit system.

Harvey, sometimes in crossover networks the tweeter needs to have reversed polarity in order to obtain the designed FR... I believe 2nd order eletrical XO's require this, but I'm not 100% sure.
Would make sense though, since a 2nd order XO creates a 180 degree phase shift :)

Regarding the tweeter, find a low buck tweeter on partsexpress that fits, and if the sound is wierd, post back and we can help you out :)
