I am trying to find a replacement for an HP DV5-1150us mini PCIE card for a family member. It came with the Intel Wifi 5100 installed.

Other notebooks on the same network operate fine, but this one does not. I have tried all software routes (Clean Instal of Vista and then SP2 with most recent drivers included) to try to get it to work.

I have tried other routers, and checked the card itself to make sure that it is seated properly and the antenna connections are good. It diplays excellent signal strength when it connects but it drops connection very frequently.

It also creates a new network connection with the same name and appends an increasing number to it. As in network X 1, network X 2, etc. up to at least 12.

I am comfortable doing the replacement, I just need a recommended card and source. I could not find any at the Egg.

FYI the Dell 1515 I have in a Studio XPS 13 (Vista) works just fine, as well as an older Compaq v2312us (XP) with a broadcom B/G work fine that my sister uses.

If you are comfortable doing so, pull the wireless card from another laptop and test it in the "problem" machine to verify that you actually have a problem with the wireless card and not with a different component in the laptop, such as the MiniPCIE slot.

You can start here to find sources for a new adapter.

I will try swapping cards. I didn't think of that, thanks.

And thanks for the links as well. I am thinking that I may stay away from the Intel units, if the other card works in that unit. In case it is a chipset or driver issue preventing the card from working with his laptop.

This may be a bit of a dumb question, but here it goes anyway:

I am going to try swapping in my Dell 1515 from my laptop into his. The drivers I use from Dell's site would be the correct ones for the card regardless of the system? Both are Vista 64.

Thanks.

Yap, if it the same card and the same OS it should work on any computer that run the same OS, and can take the hardware.

The only "tricky" part is the connection to the Antenna it has to much the jack and connect to the main Antenna plug if their id two jacks.

Dell has good manual on its support site so you can log on and see physical picture on how both installation look like.

Don t get too anxious and raise blood pressure because of $20. ;) (that is the going price of these cards on eBay).
