Yes, you can turn off indexing. Should be options for that. Can't tell you off the top of my head, not on a Vista machine right now.

The only two reasons that I can come up with are that you either have a pirated copy and don't want to break your anti-activation hacks or that you like running an out of date, insecure box for some reason.
