Captain Obvious to the rescue!! 😛
I agree. If it were me I'd fix the perfectly fine defragger that came with Vista instead of adding redundant applications to my install.

Im not sure what it could be? if I knew I wouldnt bother, I like to defrag once a week.

Have you tried opening a command prompt and typing "defrag c:" ?
Also, how were you trying to launch the defrag softare? Did you navigate through the Control Panel, or use 'right-click'>'properties'>'tools'>defragment now'? You can also right-click on My Computer icon, go to Manage, and the option will be there too.
When did this stop working? Have you done any Windows updates recently? Have you installed any 3rd party software recently?
There isn't too much Windows Defrag software won't do that any other defrag software will do. A defrag is a defrag, and in the end you get the same results no matter what you use.
What would the obvious reasons be?No I dont bother with windows updates, for Obv reasons

The only two reasons that I can come up with are that you either have a pirated copy and don't want to break your anti-activation hacks or that you like running an out of date, insecure box for some reason.

You can try AusLogics Disk Defrag. This defragger is free and is compatible with Vista. You can get it here: http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/index.php
No my copys genuine , I had problems with XP and SP2, some of my CAD software that cost a shilling or two stopped working and the performance hit wasnt welcome either.

You know that you can remove updates in Add/Remove Programs or use System Restore to roll back in the case than an update does break something, right?
Yeah but then doesnt that defeat the point. Ah well maybe when I buy another 2gb stick I'll allow auto updates bk on

No, it keeps you up to date on everything except whatever might cause you problems.

Yeah.. clarkey01, you're not making much sense. There's really no reason to not use Windows Update in Vista.
I just built my rig and I dont want to slow it down even the smallest bit.

I tried several ways to try and get vista defrag working but it seems it's never going to work without a restore point, which will be a pain as Iv'e installed alot of software in the last few days.
But it appears that in execution, it's not so perfect?

Defrag only runs when your computer. IE when my laptop is sitting here plugged into the outlet, and doing nothing, the hard drive will get to spinning and defrag. The moment I tought the mouse or a key it stops. Vista indexes, updates, and defrags on idle processes, and really it's perfect in doing it. Get out of the XP mentality, this is different. And your whining about a patch is ridiculous. Even if a security patch would subtract maby 1fps off a CAD program, you're not going to notice it. On a rig like that, unless you're mismanaging it, which apparently you are, Vista's maintenance isn't going to affect it.

Either that or it is indexing your files.
