Super has become bloated nagware lately and seems to crash A LOT. What's a good freeware replacement with a lot of flexibility in output formats?

Try Handbrake, but download v0.9.3. They didn't dump .avi output until v0.9.4.

Tried 0.9.3, ran a quick test on 3 files. Trying to go from M4V to AVI and it spit out 3 bad files. Apparently it won't convert from M4V to AVI? Plus handbrake is kind of a pain to use. Super was nice since you could add a folder's worth of files at a time instead of each one individually.

VirtualDUB fails, Quick Media Converter fails. I can't get either one of those to do ANYTHING with ANY file.....

When I was looking for free media converters for a project last year, I believe I ended up using Freemake:

http://www.freemake.com/

It may not have as many features or tweaks as some of the other programs, but does have a good number of conversion options, and the interface is quite simple to use.

X2 I use freemake if I absolutely need to encode to avi. The feature set isn't bad if you choose the custom option. Does a good job imo.

+3 for Freemake Video Converter

Try it, but please make sure you do not install the bundled smiley pack during installation, click CUSTOM and deselect the crap that's included.

Otherwise, it has an easy to use interface and does the job well

Yeah, I noticed that it wanted to install a toolbar so I picked advanced and unselected everything.

So far, I'm liking it. Unfortunately my daughters media player requires AVI hence my need for it.
