Replacement for Norton Antivirus

I'm using Antivirus as part of Systemworks 2003 and was wondering if there is a better replacement out there. I've been using Norton for as long as I can remember but its really starting to get on my nerves. It runs like 5 or 6 different programs in the background and installs all sorts of crap in all types of different places that I can't remove. What is the best alternative out there that can provide the same security with auto-updating virus definitions that doesn't bulk the system up with loads of crap..?

What kind of stuff bothers you about Norton AV? You can disable most of the stuff like IM, E-mail scanning, and automatic updates. I have a friend who swears by McAfee Antivirus, while I'm content with Norton AV 2002.
