replacement for motorola razr?

i have an original motorola razr on verizon network for about 5 years now. it generally works for my purposes, except recently when i hold it the antenna reception drops to nothing, and i'm unable to make or recieve calls.

i'm guessing this is some hardware issue related to the antenna.

anyways, i'm long overdue for a replacement... but i don't want to pay for a data package on a smartphone. $30 a month extra seems ridiculous when i don't use my phone that much.

what are my replacement options? any suggestions?

It's pretty different from a RAZR, but the Kin phones no longer require a data plan. Yet they have WiFi. They're not quite smartphones but they are more capable than most feature phones.

The only thing is you should probably make sure to block data if you don't pay for a data plan, otherwise it might end up using a small amount and charging you $2.

It's too bad the only Motorola phone Verizon sells anymore is the Barrage (a push-to-talk phone). They used to have the W766 Entice, which was the closest thing you could get to a modernized RAZR. You could look for one on eBay or something, but if you want to use your Verizon upgrade discount you're kind of limited.

Or a slider with full keyboard for texting?

Casio made a rugged texter. Pretty cool. Also, somebody out there made a rugged smartphone, but I forgot who.

Yeah, right now i'm looking at the kin TWOm and the LG Cosmos Touch.

both have slideout qwerty keyboards. the camera on the kin is vastly superior in terms of specs to the one on the cosmos, but the keyboard on the cosmos is a lot better.

both have bluetooth, which i'll be needing.

i won't be using the "social networking" features of either. the kin has the ability to play video apparently... but i have an ipod touch. a qwerty keyboard would be nice for texting, though.

T-Mobile has the Motorola Defy running Android 2.1 iirc. Its waterproof for like 30 mins.

Honestly, just see if you can get another RAZR or a KRZR, which is a small version of the RAZR. There's probably a few that are still boxed up that are on sale through various online retailers. May want to talk with your phone company to see how easy it will be to swap the phones, move your contacts, etc.

i'm on an existing contract with an existing family plan. not switching from verizon, not changing contracts.

OK, then I guess you're not entitled to a free phone yet. Kin One is the cheapest to buy, and it actually looks pretty good.

If you haven't gotten a new phone on your line in the past two years then you're probably out of contract, at least for that line. With family plans, each line has a separate contract.

There are some phones on Verizon that have a T9 keypad as well as a slide out QWERTY keyboard. I'm not sure how good they are but if they're just simple phones there's not a whole lot that can go wrong. My family has been using Samsung dumbphones for a while and they're happy with them. Samsung may not be the best but for dumbphones they're not bad.

yeah, existing family plan. any contract i had is long since over, i guess.

from what i can tell, verizon hasn't even offered the v3m since 2007...
