Replacement for Logitech z-680 satellite speaker

I lent my dad my z680s for a couple years... got them back last week, and one of the satellites is blown. So, I figured these are my two options:

- Get a replacement driver to drop in if I can find one that fits
- Get a (cheap-ish) pair of speakers to use as the 'fronts' for the logitech set.

The speakers are going to be used on our 2nd TV, mainly for gaming and music.

Any suggestions? I was peaking around on Newegg since I have a $150 gift certificate to use there (though I don't necessarily want the pair to cost that much. $50-100 would be better, since the whole z680 set was only $300 a few years back).

Are you sure it's the speaker that's broken and not the amp for that channel?

I think the Polk Monitor Audio has a pair of Monitor 30s for $110 and also there is a pair of PA speakers, the PYLE PPHP-1259 at $100 with high sensitivity (92db) which would be very easy to drive.

Yeah, the Monitor 30s were what I was eyeing. Just wanted to get some opinions. If there's some other option out there (doesn't have to be from the egg), cool, but I might just go with these and call it good. I'm sure they'll be better than the stock satellites...

Ther'es no point in getting a "higher end" satellite to replace the Logitech one(s) with. The problem with their set is that the crossover is set REALLY high and cannot be changed, so even if you were to put a bigger/better satellite with it its still going to be missing quite a bit of the fullness it would normally have because the amp is cutting it off.

So I'd just find the cheapest way of replacing it as you can, and what Yoyo posted above is probably the best way to go.

Thanks YoYo - that looks pretty damn close. For $15, I'll give it a shot.

I hear ya' Slick - the only bonus of getting the nicer speakers would have been if I eventually found a replacement for the logitech sat and re-used the new ones for something else (like going from my current 5.1 main setup to 7.1 or just plain replacing the z-680s altogether on the second setup).

Since I don't know if the screw holes line up or if the actual specifications (sensitivity etc.) match the other z-680s, I think getting BlahBlahYouToo's spare would be safer if the price is the same.

If you might have future plans for other speakers, it wouldn't be a bad move to just make the upgrade.

Even if the 80Hz-140Hz (or whatever it is) range on new speakers don't get used right away, it's probably still going to sound better if you get reasonable new speakers.

I'll check the specs when I get home and see if I can verify that the screw holes line up. From just looking at the pic, though, the hole placement looks similar and the speaker in general looks very similar.

Necro!

Just wondering if you ever got it all to work again. The right front channel quit working on mine before I ever used them. I bought them just as I started planning a home theater building (16x16x16 man cave). A year later, it was built and electrified, so I hooked them up just to see how they sounded and left them there for almost another year as I did finishing work and furnished it. When I finally got the chance to try them with a digital surround sound source (a "new" SN45G nForce 2 MCP-T HTPC system ), I noticed that the right-front channel was not working, but I could have sworn that it worked in analog mode.

I was two days outside of warranty when I had the time to figure out that it wasn't a problem with my HTPC configuration and Logitech wouldn't help me one bit despite their legendary after-warranty service. Oh, they offered me a Z-5500 system for half-price, but that was exactly as much as I had paid for the Z-680s and it would have meant I was actually paying full price. :(

The speaker itself was fine (works in other channels).

Good news! I fruitlessly took them apart looking for more fuses almost a decade ago but I did it again today and I think I found them this time. Will update if successful!

I did notice a ring terminal that wasn't secured to anything, so I wonder where that was supposed to be. I already scoured the 'net looking for disassembly guides so I could try to get farther than before but there appear to be none. Hmm. I'll keep my eyes open.

I think I need to take another crack at that Sega CD that didn't match any of the fuse locations or types on three different motherboard pictures I found back then.
