I have an Altec Lasing 221 speaker system with subwoofer
that I’ve had since 2003 and recently the speakers have developed a noticeable humming sound. It’s hooked up to my i5 4590 desktop computer in a small room and I listen to a lot of music with it and would like to know what would be a suitable replacement?

Probably the Logitech Z323 is the most comparable: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Speaker-System-Z323-Subwoofer/dp/B002FU5QM0

But if you listen to a lot of music, and are able to really crank the volume up, I'd personally recommend the Z623: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z623-Watt-Speaker-System/dp/B003VAHYTG/

I always recommend heading to a store like Best Buy to listen to them, and see how they sound to you as people's audio preferences vary quite a bit depending on the type of music you listen to.

if you listen to a lot of music, might as well go premium instead of standard, why sacrifice higher-end quality because of consumer marketing standards?

DAC (Dragonfly Red w/Jitterbug) -> Sound mixer (By choice) -> and your choice of speakers
