Hello all,

I originally bought this CPU because I was OCing and I didn't want to spend a lot of money in case I ruined the chip. I have now had it for over a year and would like to upgrade the CPU. I don't want to spend more than $100 (total with taxes and shipping). What chips would you recommend? Do I stay Duron and go for the Morgan Core or do I go for a Thunderbird 1.0+ GHz.

Finally, other than Newegg, any recommendations for place of purchase?

Thanks.

:)

Garet Jax, According to Asus, it looks like your board will accept an XP with bios 1007 or later, you may want to check for specific board rev though. You can get an XP up to 1800+ for less than $100 according to pricewatch.
I've been buying a few things from Allstarshop.com and have had pretty good luck with them so far - no returns yet though. http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/shop.asp Looks like they have a 1600 for $80. My first choice for buying online has been KD Computers (http://www.kdcomputers.com/eui/prime/main.htm). They're a little high on cpus, but they have a decent selection of heatsinks and fans at reasonable prices. They ship quickly and for my location it only takes UPS Ground 1-2 days to deliver.
Hope this helps you out.

XP1600+ from newegg -- $75. Mine is running at 2000+ now with .025V extra. I'm not sure you can run it in your mobo but it sounds like it.

IRJack/Jaybee,

Thanks a lot for the info. It looks like the the XP 1600+ fits the bill. I need to do a little research to make sure it is compatible with my setup, but its price is good $75 shipped + taxes from NewEgg.

PS - You'll want to unlock it to get the most out of it. I don't think your SDRAM will let you oc much on the fsb. Check out my tips here regarding unlocking.

No problem Garet Jax.

jaybee, did you just paint right over the pits of the L1 when you were unlocking or did you have to use some kind of filler?
I unlocked a duron about a year ago with a soldering iron, fine strands of wire and a steady hand (the microscope didn't hurt, neither). Thought about doing my 1600 the same way, but your method sounds much easier. Any idea how long the defogger mod will last?

If your board supports it, tcwo.com, one of THE best place to buy a cpu from on the internet, has the xp 1800+ with cooler for 97.00 + no charge for ups ground shipping. I am going to order one this week. For 97.00 the cooler comes with it and they give a one yr warr. I have had to return one before and it was no questions asked, of coarse, I do not overclock either. good luck

I used a gel-type superglue to fill the laser holes. I tried painting without the filler first, and the paint seeped over to the next bridge. So, I used two pieces of tape to mask everything but the series of laser holes and dropped some glue in. When it dried, I wiped away the excess with a credit card. Painted on top of that.

I think it'll last as long as I need it to, and if I have to redo it, it'll take less than an hour from shutting down my system to powering it back up. The microscope will help check your masks btw. You've got to place them very close to ensure the paint traces don't connect. And if they do, that's where the pushpin comes in.

Essentially, if you have PCB 1.04 and BIOS 1005 or later, your maximum CPU is an Athlon 1.4 GHz.

If you have PCB 1.05. and BIOS 1007 or later, then you can support all the way upto Athlon XP 2100+.

It looks like this means I am good to an Athlon 1.4.

Bummer you can't do the XP, Garet Jax. Tbird 1400 kicks out a LOT of heat.

Good info on the bridges, jaybee. I'll give it a shot next time the cpu is out.

Ya, no kidding :(

I confirmed it yesterday with a different tech support person. My MB maxs out at 1.4 Athlon.

When you say a lot of heat, I have a GlobalWIN CAK38 HSF. This should be sufficient to cool with a little Arctic Silver II applied, right?

I believe AMD specs a Tbird 1400 @ 72W - even more than XP2100+.
You can go here for a review of the CAK38 used on a Tbird1.133 @ 1400
http://www.vr-zone.com/reviews/cak38/

Looks like it should be ok. I'm not really familiar with their "Senfu Thermal Probe", but it couldn't be any worse than trusting the socket thermistor.
