Replacement backlight for laptop?

My brother's laptop's monitor suddenly went black on him. He thinks its the backlight, and he was wondering if there's any way he could fix it on his own without having to get it repaired (to save money).

That's about all the info I have...it's some HP laptop...a bit older too.

Generally speaking, on laptops that have been around for a while, yes you can replace the back light on your own. They tend to be a little pricy but, it beats replacing the laptop.

We found a replacement backlight (its for an HP Pavilion ze1210), but now we'd like to figure out exactly how we could replace it on our own.

Oh, and what else could be causing the screen to be completely black? I wouldn't want to get the part and then have the new backlight not fix it.
