Replaced motherboard, gets fried, methinks PSU culprit.

I was doing some tech support on an eMachine model C2480. It seemed to boot, but no video. Installed an old AGP card and still no joy. Used a better power supply but no go. I tested the cpu in another mobo and it was good. Put new mobo into old box and no boot... hear static click, smell ozone, oh oh.
I think it's the PSU, but I don't have workbench electronics tester.
Do PSUs sometimes kill the mobo? It's past warranty, or atleast that's what Fry's told my customer. I think I'll check with eMachine. How long are these warranties usually?

EDIT: When I booted it for the first time those 3 lights on the keyboard went on and stayed on. I'd never seen that before. How can I bill the guy if I don't have the tools to test this crap?

Emachines uses cheap parts period. Yes that power supply could have fried it and it could have fried itself. I'd replace it with something better than an oem emachines motherboard.

The last e-machines I looked at, it was pushing just 11v on the 12v line. They are very cheap units indeed.

And of course I've had my hands on a PSU once that wasn't pushing out the typical 5v & 12v, rather a welcoming 10v & 24v. Obviously everything in the case was instantly friend.

you can pick up a powersupply tester at compusa for like $15, or you can go the old fashion way. If they have a repair shop in your store you can usually bring in the powersupply and get them to test it there.

"...in your store..."
I don't understand what you're saying. Can I bring a psu into my local compusa shop and they will test it?
