replaced cpu and psu and now have problems

OK, I replaced my xp2200 today with a XP2500 Barton. Also replaced my psu with an enermax.

Everything went well physically.

After replacing both cpu and psu, I popped out cmos battery, cleared cmos using the jumper, put the jumper back, put battery back and fired it up while holding down the del key.

This got me into bios. All I did in bios was fix date and time, nothing more (cuz I don't know what else to do.)

I saved settings to bios and exited.

I now got a mostly black screen with one line ofe gibberish near the bottom. Seemed to be random letters and symbols (All i remember was there was at least one musical note int the gibberish)

Now the computer just hung there. I manually shut down. Now when I fire back up I get the "your monitor is working properly" on the main monitor and "no signal" on the other.

Help, now what do I do. I retraced my steps and think I physically did everything ok. Did I f-up the bios?

Are you sure you board supports the Barton? Perhaps you need to update the BIOS to get proper support?

The Enermax could be a dud so you could try the original PSU. If that fails you could try the original CPU just to make sure nothing was damaged with the new hardware install.

just to update: I thought maybe the "no signal" meant I had fried my vid board. I just replace the vid board about 2 weeks ago so I still have my old one. Popped that one in and the same result, nothing.

I tried clearing cmos again hoping I could get back to bios with not luck.

I dont think your board supports the new cpu. Does the 2500+ have a higher FSB than the 2200+? Cause that would explain the funky symbols if the board dosent support the FSB its trying to run at. My old board came up with love hearts and all sorts of odd symbols when run at a very high FSB.

If you have your old CPU, pop that in there and use it to update your BIOS. Make sure the new BIOS supports Bartons. Unless it doesn't, you should be fine.

I'd like to hear if anybody is running the a7n8x deluxe with the xp2500 Barton. Seems like a couple of years ago the Barton was the most wanted thing around. And when I bought the mobo 3 years it was one of the most popular at that time.

I bought the Barton off someone who frequents this forum and is quite knowledgeable, and knew which mobo I'd be putting it into.

I'd be shocked if that mobo and cpu don't go together. It maybe that the Barton is capable of running at a higher fsb (200) but will work at 166.

Your CPU should be supported, based on ASUS website which states under CPU specification:
"Socket A for AMD Athlon XP/Athlon/Duron
Thoroughbred/Barton Core support"
Try your old CPU if still available to see if it works with a known good processor. Hope you didn't buy one that someone oc'd to death.

yep, i'm running that board and processor using 2X 512mb Corsair XMS Platinum ram with a 365watt Antec psu...it's been over 3.5 years, never had to re-install WinXP, never had to put new AS5 on the Zalman 7000Cu...this processor and this board go together like peanut butter & jelly.

actually i'm using it right now for my web surfing stuff.

Barton 2500+ is 166 FSB. the only 200 models were 3000+ and 3200+, but your motherboard should default to the 166...unless you specify what to run it at in the BIOS

.02 again...i ran my Corsair DDR333 @ 400mhz for a while with no ill affects...but that was basically just to see if it would run at that speed.

I'm pretty sure I f'd up my bios. When I got into the bios, after my cpu and psu swap, I think I was supposed to set system defaults (or something like that)

Anyway, I've order new bios chip from Badflash and hope to have it later this week.

You can't mess up your BIOS by simply installing a new CPU. And pulling the battery or using the "clear CMOS" jumper is going to set everything to default. You also need special tools for installing and removing BIOS chips so it's not recommended unless it's a last resort.

Have you tried original the CPU and PSU per my first reply?

ordered the new bios chip from Badflash on Sunday. It arrived on Wednesday (this is with free shipping). Popped it in, fired it up. When it went into bios, this time I set system defaults, and everything is now wonderful.

I read somewhere that you shouldn't do the F10 save in bios and the Save and Exit. That is exactly what I did (the first time when the bios got screwed up). Who knows if thats what messed it up. Anyway, this time I only did the Save and Exit.

Thanks to all for your help.
