Replaced a p3 450 with a Celeron 1.4Ghz, and something is fishy

I have an old dell xps t450 which used to run a PIII 450 MHz slot 1 processor. I decided to try swapping it with a 1.4ghz celeron tualatin processor, using a slocket. Initially it worked fine, but after only a few minutes it started acting very odd, and eventually things stopped working.
Here's what I've observed:

0) The OS (win 2k) still works fine. There doesnt seem to be any noticeable problem with running my tv tuner, using explorer, or anything like that. Seems ok.

1) After putting the processor in I ran Metal Gear Solid 2, and it worked alright but I noticed that some 3d models were turned sidewards (weird), then after playing the game for a couple minutes it seemed vertices from the 3d models started to lock into some position, so moving the character around would stretch part of their heads. (really weird)

2) Then I tried rebooting and starting the program again, and this time it was doing the weird stretching and glitching thing from the start.

3) Being clueless I rebooted again to see if this was a fluke, but this time the program would give me nothing but a blank screen.

4) Using DXDiag for Direct X 9a I noticed that the Direct 3d test (with the rotating cube) was REALLY glitchy for dx7 interfaces, but it gets progressively better as one works up to the dx9 interfaces, eventhough that also has occasional flashes and glitches. Some times are worse than others.

5) I decided to try running something older (the sims) and that starts laoding, then hops out with a message box saying that there was a problem with one of the libraries. Also, the audio is really distorted, being not much more than static in some cases.

6) I also used 3dmark2000, and that also appeared to lock on me.

7) A motherboard monitor i tried using reported a floating point error.

8) Windows and Direct X detect the processor fine, but my bios reports it as a Pentium Pro 1200Mhz. Is this correct? 1200Mhz?

Swapping back to the old processor resolves all these problems. I'm not really sure how to interpret this as most things appear to work fine... It seems the problems occur when Im trying to use direct x interfaces, I think. At first I thought it was heat so i replaced the thermal tape with arctic silver, but that didnt help. I unplugged my dvd drive, and my second hard drive thinking it might be that my power supply (the specs say its only 200W) wasn't powerful enough for everything but that also didn't appear to help.

Does anyone know what this could possibly be? I would appreciate ANY help...Thanks. Please pardon me if I did something really dumb.

I think your voltage is probably off. Tutalins take a lot less than previous Pentium 3 class chips. Does the slotket adapt voltage? Otherwise your motherboard probably can't provide a current low enough.

Well, the slotket has a set of jumpers to adjust the voltage, and I have it set to 1.50V, which is what the intel site said the core voltage of this processor was. Earlier I tried disconnecting my DVD drive and my one of my hard drives, and I still had the same problem. If it is a lack of proper power, do you think that removing those two components wouldnt have been enough to provide enough extra for the processor? I dont really have anything better in terms of a power supply laying around and Im kinda reluctant to buy one unless i was mildly sure there was a problem with mine.

There was a post in the foruns about running a Celeron A on a BH6 (I can't seem to find it now) that went into a lot of detail about running a Tualatin based Celeron on an older mobo, some boards can, some can't. You will need a different slocket than a regular one. This post may have more information.

Good luck............

That's the same slocket I have. Im kinda worried it miught be a board issue, as im too broke to replace it. So no luck in that being the problem ):
