and add a cheap fanmate for more speed control
no need for controller since the unit comes w/ 5v and 12v options.. and even at its full speed i can't even notice it... vf700-cu hands down!
Can the X800-XL control the speed of the VF700 (like it controls the stock fan)?

I have the x800 xt pe. Currently, I'm using the ZMC-HP. I have a 92mm fan running at 12v for games, usually undervolted when just using windows. EXTREMELY quiet. Unlike some solutions, you don't have to worry about chucking out the entire cooler if the fan goes bad (arctic silencer, the Zalman Al-Cu), just replace the fan with another. Temps are the same as the stock cooler, which ran at maximum speed ALL THE TIME in my system.

Gigabyte makes a completely passively cooled X800XL.

Gigabyte cards can overheat without some air being moved around it. One poster on another forum took the cooler off and found out the thermal paste was extremely poorly put on. Redoing it PROPERLY with some AS5 brought down the temps around 5-10C (can't remember specifically regardless). Anyway, it was a sizably cooler card afterwards.
