replace SI-120 for XP-90C?

friend of mine is ditching his xp-90c for water cooling, and i'm wondering if its any better compared to a SI-120 which im currently using. my opty is getting close to 50C at stock with case opened.

50 @ Stock Clock Speed? That's under load I hope?

That's still a bit high, it's probably a wiser investment of time/money to get some AS5, and make sure you apply it properly, and seat the heatsink properly.

Far as I'm aware, SI-120 > xp-90c

I mean, the number is bigger for one thing! 🙂

I would say both are about equal, depending on the chosen fan. I would recommend the SI-120 (I own the XP-120) since you can use a larger (and thus quieter) fan.

I have the XP-90Cu on an Intel chip.

Both will perform about equal at 50cfm. The SI-120 in near silence, the XP-90Cu just
about silent. But if the XP-90Cu is kicked up to 80cfm it *WILL* out perform the SI-120
in a noisy fashion. It has headroom the SI-120 doesn't. The SI-120 tops out at 50cfm.
If you can get the XP-90Cu for cheap it's a good deal. If your buying new and have room
for a 120 fan over the CPU go for it.
