Replace my WHS

I have a HP Mediasmart (v1) Windows Home Server that I think may be about to dye.

I use it to backup about 200gb of small business data.

I also have it setup to sync via logmein cubby to another off site computer and some of the cubby shares we use along with google drive. (dont use all google drive because I can't pick and choose files to put on google drive, I have to use the google drive folder)

The server backs up to s3 and sometimes I access it remotley using the features built into windows home server.

Is there anything out there that I could either:
1) do the same thing perhaps this time with RAID as I don't trust this windows home server drive pooling anymore.
2) buy two units that could sit on two home networks and keep files in sync?

I tried Hamachi VPN and it wasn't fast enough for the remote user. He needs his own local files to browse & doesn't get FTP etc... on his mac. Too sophisticated for him.

Yea that looks like a total mess. Also I'm not interested in something where I build anything. Looking for a vendor I can just buy something from like I did with this HP V1 box.

Wait so I can do it all VIA Windows 8?! The same as I have?!

Sold.

Htpc server here I come. I can finnaly justify you.

bump to this thread. Anyone know of a small form factor win 8 machine that does the above? I don't want to build my own.

The whole idea of WHS was that it combines WHS OS sold together with Hardware for relatively low price like the HP MediaSmart Home Server line.

It seems that the consumer/soho at large did Not show real interest in such product and the Enthusiasts' Market is Not large enough for the Dell HP and the like to keep selling them.

So this type of market is currently dead.

That leave us with 3 options.

Build you own and install what ever OS you preferred.

By a prebuild Win 8 consumer computer and is solid enough to be On 24/7.

Spend more money and buy a business level Server with the OS of your choice.

I am considering the Dell 660s but am worried it isn't 'solid enough' to be on 24/7. I would pull the CD/DVD, install a hard drive in that bay, and then put Raid card in... perhaps.

That is something I have looked at but they are all so big. I'm looking for a small format quiet machine.

My WHS 2011 server is in an mITX case that has the ability to hold 6 3.5-inch hard drives. Depending on how much data you are storing, that may be up your alley.

Case: Lian Li PC-Q08B
Power Supply: Antec BP550 [I believe. This case will fit an ATX power supply.]
Motherboard:Asus M4A88T-I DELUXE
CPU: Athlon II X4 620
RAM: 6gb, this motherboard accepts laptop ram
HDs: Hitachi 2TB, Western Digital 1TB

I use StableBit Drive Pool which isn't RAID, but it allows for drive pooling and for duplication of particular folders. I think Drive Pool cost me an additional $20 on top of the WHS 2011 license.

This works out really well for me. Let me know if you have any other questions.
