Replace my desktop and laptop with a 9300?

I love my 6000 which I use for gaming from the couch, and web surfing, etc.
Pentium M, 1.6Ghz, 1GB DDR2 533, 60GB 7200RPM, 128MB X300. Plays games suprisingly well. I paid $850 excluding the ram and HD (have some other stuff with it like a larger battery, etc.)

My desktop is for gaming only. P4 3.4Ghz HT, 1.5GB DDR 400, 74GB Raptor, X800 XL, 30" LCD. So quite a capable rig.

I've been doing less gaming lately, and may only turn that computer on once a week. So it's seeming like a waste.

I've thought about switching to a 9300 and replacing both my desktop and laptop. For about $1200 I can get a 9300 with a 6800, and move my ram and HD over.

Will this be a wise choice since I don't game often? I can get the Audigy PC card, and the 9300 has DVI out, so can move it to my computer room and hook it up to all my other stuff (30" LCD, speakers, keyboard/mouse, etc.) when I want to do "serious" gaming.

I don't mind running lower resolutions, but would like to keep the better graphics. So I don't know if I should go with the lower-end display, or the higher end (think 1440vs 1920 wide). Concerned with the higher one that the 6800 may not keep up in a year+.

Only hesitation is that to upgrade in the future, I'd have to buy a new laptop. Where as now, I can just upgrade the vid card or whatever.

Whatchoo guys think?

Edit: And how much will I lose on the 6000 I just bought?

This is a classic dilemma, one I'm facing myself.

Do you need a laptop for portable use? A 9300 isn't the least bit portable.

Personally I would buy a notebook with a 16-pipe GPU if you're going for a total replacement, but that's going to run your price up. You won't get much for the 6000 as is, due to all the coupons. Maybe $500?

IMO I would just wait it out. Wait for Yonah (dual core Pentium M) to hit and get a DTR w/16-pipe GPU. Should be here early-mid 2006

So I'm assuming you want the best bang for the buck?

In that case definitely go with the 9300. If productivity is your main concern, go with the WSXGA+ or WUXGA+ screen. 6800 graphics of course. Minimum RAM, add your own. Minimum HDD, add your own. I wouldn't bother with much of a warranty, as its going to be inside 24/7. At least not accidental damage 😉

If you're going to ditch both your systems, now is the time. If you wait till dual core laptops are common, your systems will be outdated and resale value severely diminished.

Looking at eBay they are mostly going for around what I paid, so at least won't lose much, if any.

And yeah I don't want to wait to buy a dual-core laptop as it would be a while, and cost a bit when they are common.

I can get a lot more now for my desktop than I will be in the future, and I never use it. Having the 9300 I can just take it and hook it up to my 30" and speakers when I want to game, and keep it in the den for regular use.

Was just going to get the 1.6, cheapest ram, cheapest HD, and the 6800 and move my 1GB and 7200RPM drive over.

Be nice if I could get a deal on an XPS2...

If you're going to use the 9300 as your primary machine, get a faster CPU. Dont' count on being able to upgrade it later. Get a 1.73 or 1.86 and the rest as you said it.

I snagged a 9300 yesterday

256MB ram, 256MB Geforce 6800, DVD/CDRW, 40GB HD, nothing else really for $1062 shipped.

Not great, but figure if I wait until the next deal, the 6000 I have and the desktop I have may decrease in price more than I'd save.

I'll take the DVD/CDRW and 256MB and put it in my 6000, giving it a 80GB HD, 512MB ram, DVD/CDRW, 128MB X300.

Leaving me with a 9300 with 1GB of ram, 60GB 7200rpm drive, and a DVDRW. And will sell the 40GB that's coming with the new 9300.

On ebay the 6000s with 128MB X300s are going for a pretty good amount, so should get, I'm hoping, $700-$850 at least.

Now to my desktop...do I leave the X800 XL and Raptor in there and sell it as a gaming rig, or sell the X800 XL and Raptor seperate, and buy a SATA adapter and put my 160GB PATA drive in it and sell it identical to how I bought it (except with a 160GB hd instead of a 200GB SATA).

🙁

Sounds like a nice deal man.

In regards to the desktop, the X800XL and Raptor would sell QUICK. Dunno where you're selling it, but on FS/FT here whole systems don't move easily. You'd probly have better luck parting it out. You could eBay the whole system and see what happens at least, won't cost you much to list it.

Do you need a laptop for portable use? A 9300 isn't the least bit portable.

Close the screen, put it in a bag, and walk. Presto! It's portable. Or is seven pounds too much cary for people these days?

It's a laptop...not a sword. You won't be swinging it around, just carrying it on your shoulder or back. Rob Schneider: You can do it!

God..every time someone says a big laptop isn't portable it makes me cringe. Some people reading this forum can actually walk a fair distance with a seven pound load. When I was in the army a standard load for an infantryman was 60 pounds, and we carried that all day long.

Do some pushups or something. Geez.

Weight isn't everything. The chassis is significantly larger than the 6000. Requires a larger backpack or carrying case. Requires more desk space to use (a bit large for an airline tray for example).

Almost all carry bags that you get from best buy are designed to fit 17" notebooks.

Deskspace? Come on...are we living in Japan? If you don't have deskspace for a 17" notebook, time for a new desk.

I'm not trying to be an ass here, but saying that a 9300 isn't portable is just plain silly. A desktop isn't portable. Even a 20" laptop would be. Again, just close the screen, put it in a bag, reach down, grab a hold and forward march.

btw...I don't have a 9300. I'm defending the principle here, not my own personal preferences.

Have you ever used a laptop TRULY out and about? Personally I would not prefer to carry a 17" widescreen everywhere. I typically walk about 30-40 minutes total during a normal day, all carrying my laptop and a NUMBER of other things. Frankly I would not want to even carry a 15.4" everywhere I go, even wishing I had a 14" instead of my 15" T42. A larger laptop puts more strain on your body, increasing the stress in an already non-ergonomic situation.
Then try to use a 17" widescreen on an airplane. A 15" has enough trouble in coach, god forbid a 17".
And in regards to deskspace, we're not talking about only using a laptop at one's actual desk. Deskspace also refers to anywhere you might use it on a flat surface. Take for instance a class room. How many college lecture halls do you think have surfaces designed for 17" widescreens? A 15.4" is about the max for using in a class room.

THAT is why I asked about portability and informed him that a 9300 isn't the least bit portable IN THE WAY THAT PEOPLE USE THE WORD PORTABLE. Yes, a 17" widescreen is portable in regards to MOVING IT FROM PLACE TO PLACE. But it is impractical to use in everyday, out & about situations. My desktop would be portable if I got an LCD monitor. My case has a carrying strap, an LCD is light, and you can put a keyboard & mouse in your backpack.

Don't forget those tiny printers too!! EVERYTHING IS PORTABLE!!!!

😀😀😀😀
