replace my Celeron 466 with ??

Can someone advise me? I want to pull out my Celeron 466 (ppga socket-370)
processor and replace it with... and thats the question. Must I stick with Celeron, or would a FC-PGA
Pentium 3 be compatible with my socket-370 socket? Would it matter if the new
processor is 133/100 fsb or coppermine etc etc? I'm really just looking to spend < $100 on the cheapest solution to keep this p.c running reasonably well with todays software.

My system is a Sony Vaio mini-tower PCV-R522DS (think it's an ASUS mobo inside - not too sure about the chipset)
Appreciate any help/advice. Thanks!
😀

P3's are really high right now as Intel is no longer manufacturing them , Celeron fcpga's are still in fairly good supply, I'd go with a 1-1.3GHz Celeron if you system board can handle it they only cost around $70, make sure you use some kind of thermal compound and get a new (cheap will do) cooler 😛

You really need to visit the Sony website to find out your exact mb and chipset, that'll tell you whether you're limited to ppga or can go to fc-pga and go above 66 fsb. You may not be able to overclock it much at all. If ppga only but with 100fsb, then it's a 366 at 550. If you can do fc-pga then you can go higher. FSB is very important.

For $115 you can get an ECS K7S5A $55 board and 1.3Ghz AMD Duron
$60 the board takes SDR and DDR so no problem with what u have now

Dont bother with a new CPU when the board and chip are so cheap !
and i know what your thinking cheapy crap NO NO NO 4 of my friends are running this board and not 1 single crash not 1 single problem and it performs very well plus its a cool Black color

and the duron 1.3Ghz is a speedy CPU more then enough !

I second the idea of replacing the MB and CPU with things so cheap. However, you would need to buy a new case and PS.
BTW, you can get a 1600+ (sign faster and much more overclockable IMHO than 1.3 duron, though the 1.3 duron is fast) with the ECS board for 108 at newegg shipped, unless you live in CA. These prices are unbelievable. Hell, I just bought a 8K5A2+ with the 1600+ (even though I didn't really need it) from reading this forum.....

Checked the Sony Vaio site, their info is about as vague as it gets, Geekish not spoken there...

If you can figure out the make and model of the mobo, there's a chance of upgrading to something like a 1gig Celly2.

You'll need the processor, maybe a slotket, probably new 100mhz memory- that's after and if the bios is flash-upgradeable to accept the processor.

Not really very promising.....

If the Celly2 ends up out of the picture, tough it out for a while, save your $$, You'll be able to build a really nice new box for under $500. Save the old one as a spare, or give it to somebody who can use it....

Open the case and look at the chipset. It's probably a large chip about 1"X 1" with Intel, SIS, etc written on it. You maybe able to tell the max bus speed by the chipset. This ignores the CPU voltage issue. The old 466 Celeron have a voltage of 2.0 volts. the newer Celerons are lower voltage. RRRRRR

I searched the Asus website recently and they don't list my motherboard; I cant remember the exact model off the top of my head, they did have similar models but mine is obviously a Sony specific version they made. Yeah, the Sony website is pretty non-geek!
Looks like I am going to be restricted by the mobo; so I'm just going to leave it as it is. This is after all my number 3 machine. Pretty sure I would run into problems with the fsb and the multiplier etc if I put a faster processor in it. I was hoping you guys would have said 'yeah, if it's a celery 466, then you can put any celery up to a 1gh in it '. You can tell I'm a socket-a kinda guy, cant you!
I've put plenty of memory and good graphics card in it, so it doesnt run too bad . Maybe in a couple of years I can rip everything out and put a new MicroATX mobo in it etc etc.

Thanks for your comments guys, appreciate them!
