I dropped my cheap 1.5GB Perception Digital player on the floor, and the LCD screen cracked...

Is it possible for me to open 'er up and replace the screen? I know it's 128x128, and the backlight still works.

Without the screen, it's either a portable hard drive, or an iPod shuffle.

you can, if you can find out who supplied the LCD in the first place, and find a local distributor.

You better have good equipment or superhuman skills with a soldering iron. LCDs have lots of pins.

Unfortunately, not usually. Most times there's either a dense, flat cable, or pins attached. If it's a cable, there's a chance that all you'll have to worry about is a weird retention mechanism. I've never taken anything apart with a more dense display than a TI-31 calculator, so I'm not sure. There is a good chance, though, that soldering will be needed.

Send it to Apple, I beleive they repair iPODS for $99. Your Second option is to buy another iPOD and swap the Hard Drives in the New one. You can use the second HDD (Compact Flash Hitachi Mirodrive) for what ever you like.
