I bought a "toe touch" drain stopper for my master bathrooms tub for the sake of my sons rear end. It's had this kind of stopper

The nub is rough and my son being not yet 3 tends to slip around playing and with get hurt or even cut by that kind.

This has led me to want to replace it with something that is less likely to hurt him and the "toe touch" style stoppers like this

.

I got the old stopper out yesterday but the new one doesn't go down close enough to make a seal.

Has anyone gone through something similar and found a way to figure out WTH to buy from the local hardware store that'll actually fit correctly?

I'd just use an old school rubber stopper. Take the metal ring off, and it should be absolutely injury-free, and pain resistant.

Probably because the basin thread is either smaller or larger than the actual drain your putting in. Is this WATTS brand? I had the same problem when repalcing my old strainer (with the leaver type) with exactly what you have. What you have is actually better, it has the least moving parts and is simpler. I don't like that lever type, the plunger tends to clog and gaskets tend to seize.

Take a picture, bring the old stopper and talk to the people at the hardware store. They should have a pretty good idea.

Actually have my old stopper in my car and plan on running to a hardware store on lunch today but figured I'd see if I could figure it all out beforehand to save time and possibly being led in the wrong direction by someone at the store.

You may have to replace more than just the stopper. Odds are, your drain fitting and stopper are a set, and in order to get a different stopper to work, you're going to have to replace the drain fitting too.
Take your existing stopper to a plumbing supply store, not your local Ace Hardware or Home Depot.

You win the thread!

I went on lunch to Home Depot with the old stopper in hand and sure enough I have to replace the drain itself and the stopper as they're a set.

Got a kit and some silicone and should be able to finish this mini-project tonight.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and education, as always.

This is what I said in the previous post.

 Guess I didn't understand what you said to mean that. I did read your post but seemed like you were saying you had issues also and the type of drain but not that the whole thing needed replacing.

My bad. ^+Karma for you too!
