My DFI Lanparty mobo took a dump on me and I need to repair my system. My problem is do I buy one of the few socket 939 boards out there still and re-use my Athlon 64 X2 4400+ or do I upgrade to an AM2 mobo and buy a new CPU?

Money wise the difference is about spending $50 as opposed to $250 so not much.

Is the potential for future upgrading worth it?

Are the newer AM2 boards having fewer problems than the 939 boards?

Thanks

Not if you're staying with AMD64. The performance difference between S939 and AM2 is less than 10%. $250 would be much better spent on an Intel setup.

As I mentioned to someone else, why not get the foxconn nforce4 board for $40; for an extra $20 you get a spare 3500 at newegg.

what does your 4400 oc to? If you dump 939 I might be interested- my x2 3800 is getting a bit weak @ 2.6

Well, I'm leaning toward upgrading to an Intel CPU and Mobo. I've never tried OC'ing the 4400 cpu so I don't know what it will do. I'm overseas now and won't be able to tear into this until Late January or early February when I get home.

The time will definitely be your aid in terms of prices, availability, and hopefully some competition from amd (which will bolster both)

Dude, get the X2 6400+ It's STUPID cheap ($180 for 3.2 GHz), and a basic AM2 board shouldn't set you back more than $80 or so. Not much overclocking potential, but who cares?

It's a hell of a deal for a really really fast dual core system.

Still, any platform shift you do requires some DDR2 RAM, but that's stupid cheap now too!
