Replace 6800gt pci-e hope with what?

Have been waiting for pci-e 6800gt's for a while, but it's annoying having a completely new computer minus a vid card. Was wondering which would be a better choice for temporary replacement, something that will last for a while until stock goes up/prices go down/something new comes out.

Should I go with the 6600gt pci-e card or the 6800 pci-e card....the 6600gt has better speeds (especially the Leadtek one) but the 6800 has 256mb. Would either one be able to run some newer games (HL-2, Farcry) and decent res with options turned on? I just want something that I can be happy playing with for a few months that won't just be a huge waste of money. Or, as is usually case, would it be better to just wait even longer for some 6800gt's to come back in stock.

Thanks,
Aip

i am sure they will both be able to run HL2 and FarCry just fine, at least 1024x768 with max settings. they've been benchied so many times on both games, you should be able to find a chart with those cards included somewhere on the net.

i'm almost finished playing the single player mode of HL2, and i did it all on the card in my sig, 1024x768 with medium settings. never a dull moment, no problems at all. those 2 cards you're looking at are leagues ahead of the one i have so you should be able to enjoy the game to its fullest.

Hmm, I've heard about some places that do trade up's. Is there anywhere where I can get a 6600gt or 6800 pci-e and trade it in later for a 6800gt when they are in stock and a little cheaper?

why don't you buy the cheapest 6600GT that you can find (from a reputable site), buy it, and wait for the next generation of cards. The 6600GT should hold out until then.

exactly what im doing

i would think so. the 6600gt has better speeds, but the 6800 has more pixel pipelines. i belive 4 more, and 2 more vertex pipelines? overall the 6800 is marginally faster then the 6600gt, plus it has 256mb of ram. i would get a 6600gt, and wait till next gen 😀
do u have an sli mobo?

I faced this same decision this week. I went with the 6600GT, pocketed the 150 dollar difference in price knowing that 6 months from now I will want a newer faster card.

Or... a month from now if the Ati X800XL lives up to the hype of matching 6800GT performance at 300 dollars. If they ever build one that makes it to a store, that is....

Yes I have an sli mobo coming...guess I'll just get a 6600gt for ordered quick with 2 day and it'll probably all arrive at about the same time, heh
