The article mentions that this is only the second detection of repeated Fast Radio Bursts, but doesn't refer to the first detection.

The first was FRB 121102, originally detected by Arecibo Observatory, and location of origin later determined by Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA):

This second repeated FRB, registered as FRB 180814, was found by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) radio telescope while still in testing operations. More FRB discoveries are hoped for when the telescope enters full operation later this year.

I think that assumes the FRBs are omnidirectional. So maybe it's the radiation blast formed when disengaging an Alcubierre drive, and it's unidirectional?

Whatever the badasses did there, they did it billions of light-years away from us. But then again...

One could also imagine that billions of years ago, advanced civilizations went to war with weapons that could vaporize entire planets, and what we are detecting now is their energy signature. I hope they were careful where they pointed those things.
