Repairing Windows

Well i was upgrading my XP Home to XP pro. The power goes out and i turn the computer back on and now says. System file missing or corrupt. I've went into the Windows Setup and tried to repair but the option for Repair isn't there. I'm lost, i have tons of stuff on there that can't be replaced at all. Is there anyway to get windows back on without losing all my stuff?

I don't understand, I assume that you are speaking of using the Recovery Console for the repair. It should have a screen which requires you to key in "R" to access this...does it not?

There are two types of repairs.

[*]'R' at the first screen is a recovery console and you can use commands like chkdsk /r
[*]'R' on the 3rd screen is a repair install feature. If 'R' is not available run the recovery console repair first.

I would recommend adding the Recovery Console to your boot menu as shown here:

You do realize you just gave instructions to a guy on how to install the recovery console from within windows, when windows not booting is the problem he's trying to fix right?

Boot up to your Windows XP cd and go into recovery there.

Try chkdsk /p and fixboot.

Yea i'm unable to get into Windows at all. Whenever i go into Windows Setup to see if i can repair the partition the "R" For repair is not there.

So once i get into the Recover Console i hit chkdsk /p then type fixboot?

ok i ran the chkdsk, then i type fixboot, now it says Are you sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C? What does this mean?

Ok, a buddy of mine helped me copy the file i needed over. Now, i get to the login of windows to click my little icon to login to windows. I'm taken to my desktop and kicked back out of it and given the error, a problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer error code 0x80004005

I can get into safe mode, but not regular mode.

Yes, try again. You can also use chkdsk /r

Okay guys, i reinstalled Windows and now everytime i boot up a Windows Boot Manager comes up and ask what i wanna boot. Old windows OS, Windows XP Home, or Windows XP Pro setup. I click XP Home, but it does this everytime. I then go into windows and unchecked 30 sec to select boot OS. Well now whenever i try to boot it sends me immediatly to some XP Pro Setup that doesn't even work now. What on earth am i to do now? Everything was working perfect until now.

modify the boot.ini file and get rid of all the entries expcept the one you need.

The boot.ini is read only, so right click the file and select properties, then uncheck the read only box, then do your editring. Afterward, reenable the read only box.
