repairing torn/ripped/cut leather

slag

Lifer
I have two small tears/rips on my leather seat. I want to try a DIY repair since its black and should be easy to match. I have read about inserting a piece of leather under the tear(s), then putting a special leather adhesive/patching compound over the top and then sanding and dying that to match. Anyone have experience with this method? Would I be better off just taking the seat base off and sending it in to get repaired?

What would y'all recommend?

The piece under is the typical method Ive heard about for a tear repair. Glue it under, then is a vinyl putty to patch level with a texture piece when you iron it and then color.
